External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has presented Covid, Conflict, and Climate (Corona, Conflict, Climate Change) as three major challenges for global food security.
Addressing the pre-launch function of the International Year of Millets 2023, the External Affairs Minister said that each of these three challenges significantly affects food security. Jaishankar said that India is the world's largest producer of millet. India accounts for about 20 percent of the world's millet production.
The Foreign Minister said that international relations started with food security. The basic idea was how to secure food for oneself and how to pass it on to others. That is why we have decided to celebrate the Indian Year of Millets internationally.
According to the Union Ministry of Agriculture, India produces 80 percent of millet in Asia. The country has a 20 percent share of the world's market production. It has been a staple food grain of central India for centuries. The ministry says that by 1965-70, millet had a 20 percent share in India's total food grain content. It has now come down to just 6 percent.
To increase the production and demand of millets, the Government of India has decided to celebrate the year 2023 as the International Millet Year. During this, Indian millet, its delicacies, and value-added products will be promoted globally.
