External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, who is on his maiden visit to South America, on Wednesday co-chaired the 8th India-Brazil Joint Commission meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Carlos Franca on issues related to trade, investment, and other consular domains. discussed extensively.

 

Jaishankar also signed agreements in the field of broadcasting and taxation with Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Franca and exchanged views on BRICS, IBSA, UN, G20, and Ukraine conflict.

The External Affairs Minister said in a tweet, 'Co-chaired the 8th #IndiaBrazil Joint Commission meeting with FM Carlos Franca. The wide-ranging discussions included trade and investment, petroleum, biofuels, edible oils and minerals, health, pharma, traditional medicine, science and technology, agriculture and livestock, space, defense, counter-terrorism, and consular domains.

 

"Exchanged views on BRICS, IBSA, UN, G20, and Ukraine conflict, as he appreciated the strong ties between the two countries and described the Brazilian Foreign Minister as warm, hospitable and productive," the Foreign Minister said in her second tweet. Thanks for the meeting.'

 

In addition, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also appreciated the Brazilian government for releasing a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

 

The External Affairs Minister is on an official visit to Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina from 22-27 August. During his visit, apart from bilateral relations with his counterparts, the External Affairs Minister will meet the top leadership of the three countries.

 

On Monday, Jaishankar concluded his first official visit to Paraguay, where he inaugurated the newly opened Indian Embassy in the capital city of Asuncion.

 

The Indian Embassy in Asuncion was jointly inaugurated by the Foreign Minister and his Paraguayan counterpart Julio Cesar Ariola.

 

He also unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Paraguay on Sunday and lauded the Asuncion Municipality's decision to place it on the city's main waterfront.

 

The External Affairs Minister also visited the historic Casa de la Independencia from where Paraguay's independence movement began more than two centuries ago.

 

This was the first visit by an Indian Foreign Minister to the Republic of Paraguay, marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

 

Ahead of his visit, Jaishankar met ambassadors of Latin American and Caribbean countries in New Delhi on Friday ahead of his visit to the region.

 

The Minister expressed his gratitude for hosting the ambassadors of the LAC countries and was positive about the potential for growing cooperation between India and South American and Caribbean countries and to the ambassadors for their perspectives and insights to strengthen mutual relations and cooperation.
