Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said in Jaipur on Saturday that regional and local languages should be promoted in the lower courts and high courts. He said that the mother tongue should not be considered less than English. He also said that 71 laws will be repealed in the monsoon session of Parliament.
Rijiju said this in the inaugural session of the conference of All India Legal Services Authority held in Jaipur. He said that in the Supreme Court, debates and decisions are in English, but we believe that regional and local languages should be given priority in the High Courts and lower courts. He does not agree with the view that an English-speaking lawyer should get more respect, more cases, or higher fees. No court should be for the privileged only. The doors of justice should be open equally to all.
Five crore cases pending in courts
He said that around 71 laws would be repealed during the monsoon session of Parliament starting Monday. Expressing concern over the increase in pendency of cases in the country, he said that such cases are going to be five crores, but the pendency of cases can be reduced by coordination between the judiciary and the government. The Law Minister said that there should be a good synergy between the Central Government and the judiciary to achieve the objective of providing justice to the people.
