Google is introducing a powerful new feature called “Fake Call Detection” to help Android users identify scam calls created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The new feature is designed to combat rising cases of “deepfake voice scams,” where cybercriminals use AI-generated voice cloning technology to impersonate friends, relatives, or trusted contacts in order to steal money or personal information.
With scam techniques becoming increasingly sophisticated, Google’s latest security tool aims to provide real-time warnings before users fall victim to fraud.
Why Fake Call Detection Became Necessary
Cybersecurity experts have warned that fraudsters are now combining multiple advanced technologies to deceive smartphone users.
Two of the most dangerous methods currently being used are:
Caller ID Spoofing
In this method, scammers manipulate caller information so that a familiar contact number appears on the victim’s phone screen, even though the call is not actually coming from that person.
AI Voice Cloning
Using AI-powered voice synthesis tools, fraudsters can replicate the voice of a friend, family member, or colleague with alarming accuracy.
Scammers often create fake emergency situations and pressure victims into transferring money or revealing sensitive information immediately.
Because both the phone number and the voice sound genuine, detecting the fraud becomes extremely difficult for ordinary users.
How Google’s Fake Call Detection Works
Google’s new Fake Call Detection system works silently in the background during phone calls and verifies whether the caller is genuinely using the authentic device linked to that contact.
Silent Verification Signal
When two users with the Phone by Google app communicate, the caller’s device sends a silent encrypted verification signal to the receiver’s phone.
This signal confirms whether the call is actually originating from the legitimate device associated with that number.
Scam Detection System
If a fraudster attempts to spoof a number or place a call using fake credentials, the verification process fails because the silent signal does not match the authentic device.
Real-Time Warning Alert
In such cases, users will receive an on-screen warning notifying them that the caller may not be who they claim to be.
This allows users to immediately recognize suspicious calls and disconnect before becoming victims of fraud.
Google says the entire verification process is end-to-end encrypted to ensure user privacy and security.
Which Phones Will Get the Feature?
Google has confirmed that Fake Call Detection will begin rolling out globally this month.
Eligible Devices
The feature will work on smartphones running:
Android 12 or later versions
Rollout Plan
The feature will first launch on:
Google Pixel smartphones
Later, it will expand to other Android devices using the Phone by Google app as the default calling application.
How Users Can Enable It
Users whose smartphones currently use manufacturer-specific dialer apps can download the Phone by Google app from the Google Play Store and set it as their default calling app.
Google says the feature will be enabled automatically by default, although users can disable it manually through app settings if desired.
Google Photos Also Getting a New AI Feature
Alongside Fake Call Detection, Google has announced another AI-powered feature for Google Photos called “Clothing Tag Finder.”
The upcoming feature will allow users to search their photo libraries based on clothing items and virtually organize or explore their wardrobe using AI recognition technology.
According to Google, this feature will initially roll out in:
India
United States
Brazil
AI-Powered Scams Becoming a Growing Threat
Cybersecurity experts believe AI-driven fraud attempts are becoming one of the biggest digital threats globally.
As voice cloning and deepfake technologies become more accessible, companies are increasingly investing in AI-based security solutions to counter fraud and identity impersonation.
Google’s Fake Call Detection feature represents a major step toward protecting users from next-generation cyber scams and strengthening smartphone security in the AI era.
Users are also advised to remain cautious during emergency calls requesting money transfers or personal information, even if the caller appears familiar.
