Shillong, March 27 (IANS) Former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Sangma's National People's Party (NPP) has filed a complaint with the Election Commission seeking action against Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for violating the Model Code of Conduct, a party leader said Thursday.
"We have submitted a complaint to the commission against Mukul Sangma for his 'death wish' remarks on NPP national president Purno A. Sangma," said NPP leader Conrad K. Sangma.
The NPP has also asked the Election Commision to increase security for Purno Sangma based on the "threat" by the chief minister.
On March 20, the chief minister said the former speaker wants to contest the polls because he wanted to grab something "before he dies".
Mukul Sangma said "cha.e siangna" in the Garo dialect, which translated into English means: "Before I (Purno) die, let me grab something."
Purno Samgma will face Congress candidate Daryl William Cheran Momin in the polls for the Tura parliamentary seat.
The NPP also requested the commission to use the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system for the April 9 elections in Tura, saying the chief minister can go to any extent to win the election, including manipulating the voting machines.
