China has reported its first case of monkeypox in the western megacity of Chongqing in a traveler who had come to the city from abroad. This has been confirmed in the media report.
The Wall Street Journal quoted the Chongqing Health Commission as saying that the traveler had reached China. The passenger felt some rash and other symptoms during his quarantine as per the COVID-19 controls.
After which the case of monkeypox was confirmed after reviewing the results of the test by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. As per reports, the passenger is undergoing treatment at the hospital and his condition is stable now.
As a precaution, anyone who came in close contact with the passenger was kept under medical observation. The health commission statement, citing health experts, said that the case was controlled immediately after entering Chongqing and there was no social activity.
City health officials said Chongqing's case comes after Hong Kong reported its first case of monkeypox last week, a 30-year-old man who arrived from the Philippines after traveling to the US and Canada.
As soon as news of the first Monkeypox case surfaced, a hashtag related to the Chongqing case received more than 120 million views on the Chinese social-media platform Weibo in less than an hour.
Like China's strict zero-COVID policy hashtag, this monkeypox case became a top-trending topic on the site in no time. China tried to contain the outbreak of Kovid-19 by implementing measures such as lockdown and mass testing.
The media portal quoted analysts as saying that with Chinese President Xi Jinping leading his third term in power, it is unlikely that the government will ease Covid-containment restrictions. China has reported nearly 1,000 new local COVID-19 cases a day, including asymptomatic cases, over the past week.
