Under pressure from the US, the World Health Organization (WHO) is going to change the name of monkeypox disease to MPOX. This has been claimed in an American newspaper report. This step is being taken to end the fear of the monkeypox virus.
According to 'The Politico' WHO is making this decision due to increasing pressure from Biden administration officials. US officials privately asked the World Health Organization to change the name to WHO. It can be announced on Wednesday.
Citing people with knowledge of the matter, a Politico report said that the US is concerned that the name of the monkeypox virus is deepening the stigma of the disease. Due to this, the vaccination campaign in the country is getting affected.
Let us tell you, since the beginning of May 2022, monkeypox cases have been reported in many countries. The country has recorded nearly 30,000 cases, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most cases of monkeypox virus in the United States have been found in people traveling to Europe and North America, rather than to Western or Central African countries. The virus is spreading locally in African countries. Most of the cases reported so far have been reported through primary health centers. These include cases related to intimated transmitted diseases. These are not just related to the gay intimate of men.
Last month, the WHO said that monkeypox continues to be subject to international health regulations (IHR). This emergency is a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). However, there has been some improvement in the global situation after vaccination regarding the threat of monkeypox after outbreaks in several countries.
The WHO assessed the situation region-wise. It classified the Americas as high risk, Europe as medium risk, Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, and South-East Asia as medium risk, and the Western Pacific region as low risk.
