Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Greece on a one-day visit after the BRICS summit. Significantly, after almost 40 years, an Indian Prime Minister is visiting Greece. Indira Gandhi had gone to Greece in 1983 before Prime Minister Modi.

 

PM Modi was welcomed at the airport

PM Narendra Modi arrives at Athens International Airport on his first visit to Greece. Greece's Foreign Minister George Gerapateritis arrived at the Athens airport to welcome PM Modi. Here he was welcomed with great enthusiasm.

 

Warm welcome by the Indian community

PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Indian expatriates gathered outside the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens on his arrival in Greece.

 

PM Modi will meet the Greek President

During his visit to Greece, PM Modi will also hold a meeting with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. PM Modi will meet his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the leaders will discuss ways to further deepen ties between the two countries. He will also hold talks with business leaders of both countries.

 

The Greek Prime Minister organized a lunch

A business luncheon has also been hosted by the Greek PM during the visit. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra had earlier said in the press briefing that PM Modi will hold restricted and delegation-level talks with the Prime Minister of Greece. Both leaders will also address prominent businesses of both countries followed by delegation-level talks.

 

Relations between the two countries strengthened

Prime Minister Modi last met the Greek Prime Minister in New York in September 2019 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. India and Greece share civilizational ties, which have been strengthened in recent years through cooperation in the areas of maritime transport, defense, trade, and investment.

 

Visit of an Indian PM after 40 years

Greece's Ambassador to India Dimitrios Ioannou has said that the two countries will upgrade their long-standing friendship during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Greece. The Greek Ambassador said, "We are very happy to welcome him. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister after 40 years. During this visit, we will upgrade our long friendship."

 

'Gateway to Europe for India'

Ambassador of Greece Dimitrios Ioannou said, “We are taking forward our cooperation in all important areas including security, culture, trade, economy, and technology. This is an important comprehensive partnership. We would like to be the gateway to Europe for India. Our ports can be gateways for Indian products to European markets."

 

The Prime Minister will also interact with the Indian diaspora in Greece. The Indian diaspora in Greece has expressed happiness and excitement over PM Modi's visit. Previous high-level exchanges between the two countries also include the visits of former President of India Late APJ Abdul Kalam and former President Ram Nath Kovind in June 2018.

 

Did a state visit in 1998

The President of Greece also paid a state visit to India in 1998 and the then Greek Prime Minister visited India in 2008. Greece is one of India's important European partners, a member of the European Union and NATO, and a gateway to Europe.

Kwatra said, "The visit will provide an opportunity for both India and Greece to discuss regional and global issues of mutual interest and help in broadening and deepening our bilateral relations.

 

The one-day official visit of the Prime Minister will aim at strengthening security and defense cooperation, increasing the pace of military-to-military exchanges, training personnel, and inviting Greek potential to the Make in India program, especially in the defense industry.
