The Orion spacecraft of the American space agency NASA will pass closest to the moon today. According to Indian time, at 6.27 pm, the distance between them will be only 130 km. All this is part of the Artemis-1 mission, which was recently launched on November 16 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Under this mission, NASA launched the world's most powerful 'Space Launch System (SLS) rocket'. A few minutes after takeoff, the Orion capsule separated from the rocket and headed toward the moon. NASA did everything on the third try. Earlier, there were attempts to launch on August 29 and September 3, but they had to be postponed due to technical glitches and bad weather.

What is Artemis-1's mission?

Artemis-1 is a test flight for the flagship mission, which will not send any astronauts. With this flight, the scientists aim to ensure the right conditions for the astronauts on the moon. Under the mission, the Orion crew capsule will reach very close to the Moon through NASA's SLS megarocket, but will not land.

Astronauts usually live in the crew capsule, but this time it will be empty. The mission is of 25 days, 11 hours, and 36 minutes, after which it will return to Earth. The spacecraft will travel a total distance of 20 lakh 92 thousand 147 kms.

What will Orion do near the Moon?

As it passes close to the lunar surface, the Orion spacecraft will photograph the landing sites of the Apollo 11, 12, and 14 missions. It will not be in contact with the Earth for 34 minutes. Will send data and photos to NASA after coming back in contact. Orion has already sent many pictures during its journey from Earth to the Moon.

Artemi's mission will send humans to the moon

America is once again preparing to send humans to the moon through the Artemis mission after 53 years. It is divided into three parts. Artemis-1, 2, and 3. Artemis-1's rocket will go up to the orbit of the Moon, release some small satellites and then itself will be established in the orbit.

There is a plan to launch Artemis-2 around 2024. Some astronauts will also go on this, but they will not step on the moon. They will come back only after roaming in the orbit of the moon. The duration of this mission will be longer.

After this, the final mission Artemis-3 will be dispatched. This

Astronauts going in will land on the moon. This mission can be launched in 2025 or 2026. For the first time, women will also be a part of the Human Moon Mission. In this, a Person of Color (a person of a different race than white) will also be a crew member. Astronauts will research the water and ice present at the Moon's South Pole.

How much did the Artemis mission cost?

According to an audit by the NASA Office of the Inspector General, from 2012 to 2025, the project will cost $93 billion, ie 7,434 billion rupees. At the same time, each flight will cost 4.1 billion dollars, ie 327 billion rupees. So far 37 billion dollars, i.e. 2,949 billion rupees have been spent on this project.
