The ill effects of the Corona period are now visible in the world. According to the UN's 'The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 Report', people's struggle with hunger has increased rapidly after 2019. In 2021, 768 million of the world's victims were found to be malnourished, of which 224 million (29%) were Indians. This is more than a quarter of the total number of malnourished people in the world.
According to the Global Hunger Index-2021, India is the second-largest food producer in the world. We rank first in the world in the production of milk, pulses, rice, fish, vegetables, and wheat. Nevertheless, a large population of the country is suffering from malnutrition.
In 2019, 618 million people in the world were faced with hunger, while in 2021 this number increased to 768 million. That is, in just 2 years, 15 crores (24.3%) of people increased, who did not get food for one time.
In the last two years, the pace of hunger has increased
According to the latest UN report, 240 million people were malnourished from 2004-06. They were either not able to get food for one time or the nutritious elements in their food were less than 50%. Hunger in the world has been increasing continuously for the last 15 years, but its pace has accelerated in the last two years.
On the other hand, the situation in India has shown some improvement. In India, 21.6% of the population was malnourished 15 years ago, now 16.3% of the population is not getting enough nutritious food.
obesity is a big problem in India
According to the report, some success has been achieved in India at a slow pace on the front of the war against hunger. But, on the other hand, the problem of obesity is increasing. 3.4 crore people in the age group of 15 to 49 years have come under the 'overweight' category. Whereas, 4 years ago this number was 2.5 crores.
Similarly, the problem of anemia in women has increased. A total of 18.7 crore Indian women were found to be anemic in 2021. In 2019, this number was close to 17.2 crores. That is, in two years, the number of women suffering from anemia has increased by 1.5 crores.
