After five days of high-voltage drama, OpenAI founder Sam Altman has announced his return to the AI company. I love OpenAI, and everything I've done in the last few days has been about putting this team and its mission together,' he wrote on social media. When I decided to join Microsoft, it was clear this was the best path for me and the team. “With the support of the new board and Satya, I look forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with MSFT.”
With this, it has been confirmed that Sam Altman is returning to OpenAI as Chief Executive (CEO). High-profile AI startups have also confirmed this news. The company said an environment of trust has been restored after five days of intense discussion and debate following Altman's sudden dismissal from the startup last week.
There will be changes in the board of OpenAI, Brett Taylor will be the chairman.
OpenAI, the most valuable US startup, said it had reached an agreement in principle for Altman's return. Apart from this, the startup is also making changes to its board and removing many members. Former Salesforce chief executive Brett Taylor, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Quora founder Adam D'Angelo will be part of the new board at the AI startup. The startup said Taylor will serve as chairman of the board.
Microsoft, which owns about 49% of OpenAI, was surprised by OpenAI's decision last week. The company had announced the appointment of Altman to its software group. Earlier, OpenAI's former president Greg Brockman, and countless other members of the startup had resigned in protest of the OpenAI board's decision.
Satya Nadella said- excited by the change in the board of OpenAI
Meanwhile, Microsoft chief Satya Nadella, who expressed disappointment over the OpenAI board's decision last week, said on Wednesday that he was encouraged by today's changes to the OpenAI board. “We believe this is an essential first step on the path to more stable, well-informed and effective governance,” he said. Sam, Greg, and I have talked and agreed that he has an important role to play with the OAI leadership team. This will ensure that OAI succeeds in its mission and continues to build. We look forward to building on our strong partnership and delivering the value of this next generation of AI to our customers and partners.”
The company's board was criticized after removing Altman
OpenAI's first board—consisting of its chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, independent director D'Angelo, technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner of the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology—came criticism after the decision to remove Altman. No comprehensive explanation was given by the former board in this matter. According to media reports, disappointed with the OpenAI board's decision, many OpenAI investors had started looking for options to sue the board members.
Interim CEO Emmett Shear said - happy to be part of the solution
