Parsi New Year 2022: Today the Parsi community is celebrating Navroz i.e. New Year. Navroz is also called Parsi New Year. For the people of the Parsi community, the festival of Navroz is considered a symbol of faith. The people of the Parsi community celebrate this day with great enthusiasm. Just as the new year begins in the month of Chaitra in Hindu society, in the same way, Navroz marks the beginning of the new year in Parsi society. Navroz is derived from two Persian words Nav and Roz, which means new day. That is, the new year of the Parsi community begins with the festival of Navroz. The Iranian calendar also starts from this day. The new year of the Parsi community is known by many names like Pateti, Jamshedi Navroz, Nowroz, and Navroz. So let's know about its history and tradition today...

According to the English calendar, there are 365 days in a year, but the people of the Parsi community consider only 360 days as a year. The rest of the last five days of the year are celebrated as Gatha. That is, in these five days all the family members remember their ancestors. The festival of Navroz has been celebrated in the Parsi community for the last three thousand years.

History of Navroz

According to beliefs, the people of the Parsi community celebrate the festival of Navroz in memory of King Jamshed of Persia. It is said that Jamshed, a warrior of the Parsi community, established the Parsi calendar about three thousand years ago. It is also said that on this day Jamdesh assumed the throne in Iran, that day was called Navroz in the Parsi community. Since then till today people celebrate this day as New Year.

How do you celebrate this festival?

On the day of Navroz, all the members of the Parsi family wake up early in the morning and get ready. Special dishes are made on this day, which are shared by Parsis with their friends and relatives. Apart from this, they also distribute gifts among themselves on this day to express cooperation and love toward each other. Apart from this, according to the beliefs of the Parsi community, the special worship of King Jamdesh on this day increases happiness and prosperity in the family.

Beliefs related to Navroz

On this day, after cleaning the house, Rangoli is made outside the house. Also, Parsis keep pieces of sandalwood in the house. The reason behind doing this is their belief that the air is purified by spreading the fragrance of sandalwood everywhere.

Special prayers are held on this day in the Parsi temple Agyari. During prayers, people express their gratitude to God for whatever they got in the past year. After the prayers in the temple are over, the community members wish each other a Happy New Year and celebrate.

On the day of the Parsi New Year, people make traditional dishes at home. Special prayers are also held on this day in the Parsi temple Agyari. People visit the temple and make offerings of fruits, sandalwood, milk, and flowers. Along with this, sandalwood is dedicated to the fire at the place of worship.
