Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a visit to Sikkim. During this tour, on Tuesday, he joined a group of young people in Gangtok for a game of football. He described the experience as a “lovely morning” and an “energetic session.” PM Modi also shared a video of himself playing football on his Instagram and other social media handles. He engaged in discussions with the young players regarding the Olympics and various other topics. When the Prime Minister asked: “You aren’t going to beat me, are you?”
After posting the photographs, the Prime Minister also shared a video clip—two minutes and 39 seconds in length—on social media. In the video, he is seen shaking hands with all the players. Subsequently, he picks up a football and joins them in a warm-up session. Holding the ball in his hands, he then addresses the players, saying, “This is your strength!” He continues, “What are you guys going to teach me today? You aren’t going to beat me, are you?”
“You know, don’t you, that India is striving for the Olympics?”
In the video, the Prime Minister is seen playing on the field—at times positioned on the right wing, and at others, as a center forward. On two or three occasions, the football reaches the goalpost, following which he is seen celebrating the goals along with the young players. He then remarks to one of the players, “You would make a great coach. Simply practicing isn’t enough to become a good player; you need to play actual matches. That is how you truly learn; you have to infuse the game with passion. We need to popularize this sport in the days to come. You are aware, aren’t you, that India is striving to reach the Olympics? By then, you must become seasoned players. You should start thinking right now: ‘We will train ourselves to such an extent that we, too, will play in the Olympics.’” Following this, the Prime Minister signed autographs on the football, on the camera, and on the players’ T-shirts.
