DC vs RCB: The Inside Story of Delhi's Humiliating Defeat—RCB Crushes Them by 9 Wickets, Exposing Their Biggest Weakness.

Posted on 28th Apr 2026 01:33 pm by rohit kumar

Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties, where every prediction is liable to fail. This was witnessed once again in the 39th match of IPL 2026; just a day prior, at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, a match had seen a combined total of over 500 runs scored, yet a mere 24 hours later—on the very same ground and pitch—the home team, Delhi, was bundled out for a paltry 75 runs.

The RCB bowlers delivered a magnificent performance, restricting the opposition and chasing down the target of 76 runs in just 6.3 overs. In doing so, RCB handed DC a crushing 9-wicket defeat, securing their sixth victory of the current season. The RCB squad retains the second spot on the points table, while the Delhi team languishes at the seventh position. Given this context, what exactly were the reasons behind Delhi's humiliating defeat? Let's find out.

DC vs RCB: The Major Reasons Behind Delhi's Humiliating Defeat

1. Top Order Fails Miserably

RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first—a decision that proved to be spot-on. Conversely, the top order of the DC team, batting first, was a complete disaster. With the exception of 'Impact Player' Abhishek Porel (who scored 30 runs), the top six batsmen failed completely. While the lower order did manage to scrape together some runs—thanks to David Miller (19) and Kyle Jamieson (12)—the DC batsmen simply could not hold their ground against the onslaught of the RCB bowlers.

2. The Match Was Lost in the Powerplay Itself!

Compared to the 2022 season, the run rate during the first six overs (the Powerplay) has surged by 25.7%, yet the rate at which wickets are falling has not kept pace. The average score during this phase has also risen from 31.57 to 35.61. It has become evident that whichever team dominates the Powerplay is ultimately the team that wins the match. In the current season, the top four teams on the points table also happen to be the top four teams in terms of batting performance during the Powerplay.

A strong start ensures that you remain competitive in the match right up until the very end; however, in DC's case, the reality was the exact opposite. In the match against RCB, the Delhi team lost 6 wickets for a score of just 13 runs within the first 6 overs—marking the worst Powerplay performance in the history of the tournament.

This is only the second instance in the tournament's history where a team has lost 6 wickets during the Powerplay phase. This is no mere coincidence; rather, it is a recurring theme throughout the entire season. Delhi has lost the highest number of wickets—19 in total—during the Powerplay, doing so at a dismal average of 20.73.

3. A Hero in One Match, a Zero in the Next!

Players who make significant contributions to the Delhi team in one match often prove to be complete flops in the very next one. For DC, KL Rahul could manage to score a mere 1 run in the match against RCB, a fate shared by Nitish Rama, who was also dismissed after scoring just 1 run. Sameer Rizvi failed to even open his account. Even Captain Axar Patel fell victim to Bhuvneshwar Kumar without scoring a single run.

Conversely, prior to the match against RCB, DC's KL Rahul had smashed a blistering century against the Punjab Kings. He currently sits in second place in the race for the IPL 2026 Orange Cap, having accumulated 358 runs; however, his performance remains inconsistent—while his bat fires in some matches, it falls silent in others. So far, he has scored half-centuries in 3 of the 8 matches played, whereas his bat has remained silent in another 3 matches.
