Putin's India Visit: When will Putin arrive in India, and what will he do during his 28-hour visit? Here's the full schedule.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is arriving in India today on a two-day visit. This visit will be significant in many ways. According to reports, Putin will spend approximately 28 hours on Indian soil. During this time, several important agreements are expected to be reached between the two countries.

Indeed, PM Modi will host a private dinner for Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday. It is expected that a similar atmosphere will be created at the Indian Prime Minister's official residence on Thursday, similar to the four-hour private dinner President Putin spent with PM Modi at his residence, Novo-Ogaryovo, outside Moscow, in July 2024.

Putin to Participate in Several Events

On Friday, PM Modi and the Russian President will participate in the India-Russia Business Forum held at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, and both leaders will also address the event. The summit meeting between Modi and Putin on Friday is expected to focus on enhancing defense ties, protecting India-Russia trade from external pressure, and the possibility of cooperation in small modular reactors.

Why is Putin's visit to India considered significant?

It should be noted that this visit by Russian President Putin comes at a time when the US is engaged in efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Recently, the US President claimed that Putin also wants to end this war. Putin will be formally welcomed on Friday, ahead of the 23rd India-Russia Summit.

Russian President's visit to India amid tensions with the US

It is noteworthy that the Russian President's visit to India comes at a time when the US has imposed a hefty 50 percent tariff on goods imported from India. This includes a 25 percent levy on the purchase of Russian crude oil. Due to the US tariff decision, India-US relations are perhaps going through their worst phase in the last two decades. It is reported that the summit is likely to discuss the impact of the US ban on India's purchase of crude oil from Russia.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday, "New Delhi's purchases of Russian crude oil may be temporarily reduced due to the Western sanctions, but Moscow is taking steps to increase supplies."

He stated that at the summit in New Delhi, President Putin is expected to brief PM Modi on America's new efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to end war.

What is the India-Russia Business Forum?

It is worth noting that India and Russia have a system in place whereby the Prime Minister of India and the President of Russia hold a summit meeting annually to review all aspects of the relationship. To date, India and Russia have held 22 annual summit meetings.

The Russian President last visited New Delhi in 2021. In July of last year, PM Modi visited Moscow for the annual summit. Russia has been a time-tested partner for India and a key pillar of New Delhi's foreign policy.
