In Orchha—the religious city of Bundelkhand—the festival of Ram Navami is being celebrated this year, once again, with immense reverence, devotion, and adherence to historical traditions. At the Ram Raja Temple located here, the celebration marking the birth of Lord Rama will take place at exactly 12:00 PM; devotees from far and wide are arriving to witness and participate in this auspicious event.
Orchha is often referred to as the “Ayodhya of Bundelkhand,” a distinction attributed to its unique tradition that has endured for nearly 500 years. According to historical accounts, Orchha’s Queen Kunwari Ganesh undertook a pilgrimage on foot from Ayodhya—accompanied by saints and carrying the sacred idol of Lord Rama—and arrived in Orchha on the day of Navami. It was at that very moment that Lord Rama was consecrated here as the King, and ever since, He has been worshipped as “Ram Raja Sarkar” (King Rama, the Sovereign). This tradition remains vibrant to this day and is regarded as a unique phenomenon of its kind across the entire country.
The Legend of Ram Raja
The legend associated with Orchha’s renowned Ram Raja tradition stands as a unique testament to faith and devotion. According to popular folklore, Orchha’s ruler, Madhukar Shah, was a devout worshipper of Lord Krishna, whereas his Queen, Kunwari Ganesh, was an ardent devotee of Lord Rama. Consequently, religious differences and disagreements would frequently arise between the royal couple. It is said that on one occasion, Madhukar Shah urged the Queen to accompany him to Vrindavan; however, she expressed her desire to visit Ayodhya instead. Responding with a touch of sarcasm, the King challenged her, stating that if her cherished deity, Rama, truly existed, she should bring Him from Ayodhya to Orchha.
Queen Kunwari Ganesh traveled to Ayodhya, where she undertook rigorous penance for 21 days; yet, she was granted no divine vision of Lord Rama. Despairing, she resolved to cast herself into the waters of the Sarayu River. It is believed that, pleased by her unwavering devotion, Lord Rama Himself appeared before her and granted her a divine vision in the form of a child. When, acceding to the Queen’s earnest pleas, He agreed to accompany her to Orchha, He laid down three conditions—the first being: that once He was consecrated at a specific location, He would never again be moved from that spot. Secondly, in Orchha, He alone would be worshipped as the King, and no other ruler would hold authority over Him. Thirdly, in the form of a child, He would travel to Orchha on foot—during an auspicious moment—accompanied by sages and saints. The Queen accepted all these conditions and brought Lord Rama back to Orchha with her. Since then, Lord Rama has reigned here as the ‘King,’ and the royal traditions associated with Him continue to be observed to this day at the Ramraja Temple. According to a popular couplet, Lord Rama is believed to share a special bond with both Ayodhya and Orchha: during the day, He resides in Orchha, while at night, He dwells in Ayodhya.
An Offering of 51,000 Laddus
On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, the temple complex has been magnificently adorned with flowers and captivating decorations. Following the celebration of His birth, a special Mangala Aarti (morning prayer) will be performed. For this occasion, an offering (Bhog) comprising 51,000 laddus will be presented to the deity, while Prasad (sacred food offering) consisting of laddus prepared using approximately 25 quintals of Desi Ghee (clarified butter) will be distributed among the devotees.
A grand procession (Shobhayatra) will also be taken out today, featuring a tableau (Jhankhi) of Lord Ram Raja Sarkar that is expected to be the focal point of attraction. During the procession, devotees will catch a glimpse of Lord Rama seated in the lap of Maharani Kunwar Ganesh; as the procession passes by their homes, devotees will welcome Him by applying a Tilak (sacred mark) and performing Aarti. Throughout the event, various celebratory songs, traditional Bundeli dance performances, and devotional programs will also be organized.
In Orchha, the tradition of devotees undertaking a pilgrimage on foot (Padyatra) remains vibrant to this day, keeping this historical and spiritual heritage alive. The festival of Ram Navami serves not only as a symbol of religious faith but also reflects the rich cultural and historical legacy of the Bundelkhand region.
