Suryakumar Yadav, who recently led India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title, may lose his captaincy. There is a strong possibility that he could even be dropped from the squad, with his persistent poor form cited as the primary reason. Consequently, the selectors may opt to appoint Shreyas Iyer as the new captain.
According to a report by the English daily The Times of India, when the selection committee convenes to pick the T20 squad following the 2026 IPL, a decision could be made to appoint Iyer as captain.
Impact Visible During Ireland Tour
As per the report, the selectors have grown concerned over Suryakumar’s continued slump in form and are seeking a fresh approach for the upcoming T20 World Cup cycle. India’s new T20 cycle is set to commence with the tour of Ireland; for this series, Iyer could not only make a comeback to the squad but also be handed the captaincy. India is currently mapping out its packed T20 schedule leading up to the 2028 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
The report suggests that Suryakumar’s days as captain are numbered, and it remains to be seen whether he retains his place in the team’s plans purely as a batsman. While Suryakumar has expressed a desire to continue as captain for the next two years, his poor form could stand in the way of that ambition.
Why Iyer is the Frontrunner
Currently, Iyer is not a part of India’s T20 squad. He has been out of the team for a considerable period; however, if he makes a direct re-entry into the squad as captain, it would be attributed to his stellar leadership and batting performances in the IPL. Under Iyer’s captaincy, the Delhi franchise reached its first-ever final in 2020. Subsequently, he moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders and led the franchise to the title in 2024. Last year, under his leadership, the Punjab Kings reached the final for the first time in 10 years. This season, too, he is leading Punjab effectively while consistently scoring heavily with the bat.
Led India to World Cup Glory
Under Suryakumar’s captaincy, India clinched the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, setting a new record in the process. India won the T20 World Cup in 2024 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and successfully defended the title under the leadership of Suryakumar. With this achievement, India has become the first team to win two consecutive T20 World Cups. This tournament was held in India, with Sri Lanka serving as the co-host. Consequently, India has also become the first nation to win the T20 World Cup while acting as the host country. Throughout the entire tournament, however, Suryakumar’s form remained a cause for concern.
