Reliance Industries and Meta Platforms have announced a landmark partnership to build a next-generation AI-powered data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The mega project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s position in the global artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure ecosystem.

The upcoming facility will reportedly have a massive capacity of 168 megawatts and is likely to become operational within the next two years. Industry experts believe the project marks one of the biggest advancements in India’s AI infrastructure sector.

Meta’s First Dedicated AI Data Center in India

The Jamnagar facility will serve as Meta’s first “built-to-suit” data center in India. Unlike traditional shared facilities, the center is being specially designed to meet Meta’s unique AI computing and data processing requirements.

The project highlights Meta’s growing focus on India, one of its largest digital markets globally. The company already operates major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, all of which have hundreds of millions of Indian users.

Green Energy to Power the Mega Facility

One of the standout features of the proposed AI data center is its focus on sustainability and green technology.

According to reports, the entire facility will operate using renewable energy sources. In addition, treated seawater will reportedly be used for cooling systems to efficiently manage the heat generated by high-performance AI servers and computing equipment.

This eco-friendly approach aligns with global efforts by major technology companies to reduce carbon emissions and build sustainable digital infrastructure.

Reliance and Meta Partnership Continues to Grow

The latest announcement further strengthens the relationship between Reliance and Meta, which began gaining momentum in 2020 when Meta invested billions of dollars into Jio Platforms.

That investment was viewed as a major turning point for India’s digital economy, helping accelerate growth in e-commerce, connectivity, and digital services across the country.

Now, the new AI-focused data center project signals the companies’ long-term vision to expand India’s role in emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and large-scale data processing.

Why the Gujarat AI Data Center Matters

Experts say the project could help position India as a major global hub for AI infrastructure and advanced computing capabilities.

The development is expected to:

Boost AI research and innovation

Strengthen India’s digital ecosystem

Create employment opportunities

Attract additional technology investments

Improve cloud and data processing infrastructure

Gujarat, particularly Jamnagar, is also emerging as a strategic technology and industrial destination due to its infrastructure and access to energy resources.

India’s AI Push Gains Momentum

India has been rapidly expanding its presence in the artificial intelligence sector, with both government initiatives and private sector investments accelerating over the past few years.

The Reliance-Meta collaboration is expected to play a key role in supporting India’s ambitions of becoming a global technology powerhouse while enhancing domestic AI capabilities for businesses and consumers alike.

With construction expected to progress over the next two years, the Jamnagar AI data center could become one of the most significant technology infrastructure projects in the country’s history.
