Strong opposition from Mamata government: Sharp reaction to UGC draft rule, made these allegations against the central government

On Thursday, the last day of the first phase of the budget session in the Bengal Assembly, Education Minister Bratya Basu brought a proposal demanding the withdrawal of the draft of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations 2025, which was passed in the absence of the opposition. Education Minister Basu termed this draft regulation of UGC as a blow to the federal structure.

After two MLAs of his party put forth their views on the proposal brought under Rule 169, he said in the House that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed serious concern about this draft regulation. Not only Bengal, six non-BJP ruled states have opposed it.

Allegations against the central government

Basu said that the central government is trying to capture higher education through the back door, which Bengal will not accept. Let us tell you that this draft regulation was issued on January 6 and opinion has been sought from all the states on this. According to the draft guidelines issued, one can become a vice-chancellor in a university till the age of 70. At the same time, it will not be mandatory to be from the academic field to become a vice-chancellor in universities.

Under the new rules, subject experts from industry, public administration, public policy, public sector, PSU, etc. sectors can also become Vice Chancellors. Earlier, teaching experience was a mandatory criterion in academic qualification to become a Vice-Chancellor. Which has been opposed by the Mamata government of Bengal. However, this is not the first time that the Mamata government has opposed any rule, law, scheme, or policy issued by the Central Government. Earlier, the Mamata government has also opposed the new education policy.

Fake job cards have been found in many states: including Chandrima.

After a long discussion on the budget, in the absence of opposition MLAs, Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya answered the questions raised regarding budget allocation. During this, he has said about the stoppage of funds of Sau Din Rozgar Yojana by the Central Government that not only in Bengal, there are many other states from UP to Maharashtra where fake job cards have been found, has corruption not happened there? The funds there have not been stopped, why has the fund of only Bengal been stopped?

Along with this, he also targeted the Center against stopping the funds of various schemes ranging from Rural Road Scheme. After this action, Speaker Biman Banerjee adjourned the first phase of the budget session till 11 am on March 10. The second phase of the budget session will resume on the same day.
