The BCCI selection committee is set to select the Indian squad for the upcoming Test and ODI series against Afghanistan in Guwahati on Tuesday. Although no T20 matches are scheduled for this tour, reports suggest that the selectors may engage in informal discussions regarding future T20 plans and the captaincy.
It is being reported that Suryakumar Yadav’s recent form—coupled with his performance for the Mumbai Indians during IPL 2026—has raised questions regarding his captaincy. Consequently, the selectors may now begin considering alternative options for the T20 captaincy moving forward.
Gambhir’s Input Will Be Crucial
According to reports, the opinion of Team India’s Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, could prove decisive in this entire matter. As this marks the first selection meeting following the T20 World Cup victory, the team management is expected to give serious consideration to future strategies. The selectors may also discuss potential T20 players for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. In this context, all eyes will be fixed on whether Suryakumar Yadav retains the captaincy or not.
Questions Also Surround Rishabh Pant’s Role
It is not just Suryakumar; Rishabh Pant’s future is also expected to be a subject of serious discussion within the selection committee. Reports suggest that the responsibility of the vice-captaincy in Test cricket is impacting Pant’s game. A BCCI source stated, “Indian cricket cannot afford to risk losing a match-winning batsman like Rishabh Pant. He has won numerous Test matches for the team through his aggressive batting style. However, whenever he has been entrusted with additional responsibilities, his decision-making while batting has appeared less than optimal.” The source further added, “The selection committee will certainly have it in mind to allow him the freedom to play his natural game.”
Competition May Intensify in the ODI Squad
Pant’s position is not considered entirely secure within the ODI setup either. KL Rahul is currently regarded as the first-choice wicketkeeper, while Dhruv Jurel, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan also stand as strong contenders. Consequently, the coming months could witness several significant decisions regarding the composition of the Indian team.
Bumrah May Be Rested
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the series against Afghanistan will depend on clearance from the BCCI’s medical team. If the medical board deems Bumrah’s workload to be safe, he may play the solitary Test match against Hashmatullah Shahidi’s team. A BCCI source stated, “If the medical team considers Bumrah’s workload to be within the prescribed limits, he could play the Test match against Afghanistan.” The source further added, “However, there is no possibility of him playing the ODI series. If there is even the slightest concern regarding his workload, he will be rested for the entire series.”
