The Central Government's temporary restriction on Telegram ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination has begun affecting users across India, with many existing users reporting that the instant messaging platform is no longer accessible through regular internet connections.
However, cybersecurity experts say the effectiveness of the ban may be limited, as many users continue to access Telegram through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), raising questions about the long-term impact of platform-level restrictions.
The temporary restriction has been imposed as part of broader efforts to maintain the integrity of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21.
Telegram Removed From Major App Stores
Following government directives, Telegram has gradually become unavailable through major app distribution platforms in India.
After Google reportedly removed Telegram from its app marketplace, Apple has also taken similar action by removing the application from its App Store for Indian users.
As a result, new users may face difficulties downloading and installing Telegram during the restriction period, while many existing users have reported interruptions in service access.
The move comes as authorities intensify efforts to curb misinformation, alleged paper leak claims, and unauthorized communication channels linked to examination-related activities.
Existing Users Report Service Disruptions
A large number of Telegram users across India have reported being unable to access chats, channels, and messaging services through standard network connections.
The temporary restriction was introduced under government orders as part of special measures surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination process.
Authorities believe limiting access to the platform could help prevent the circulation of confidential examination material and reduce the spread of misleading information related to paper leak allegations.
VPN Users Continue Accessing Telegram
Despite the restrictions, cybersecurity professionals argue that blocking a platform at the network level does not completely eliminate access.
According to cybersecurity experts, users employing VPN services can route internet traffic through servers located outside India, allowing them to continue using Telegram even while domestic restrictions remain in place.
Jiten Jain, Director of Voyager Infosec, noted that users connecting through international VPN servers can bypass local network restrictions and maintain access to the platform.
Experts suggest that such technical workarounds reduce the overall effectiveness of platform-specific bans, especially for digitally aware users.
Government's Focus on Exam Security
The temporary Telegram restriction is widely viewed as part of a larger strategy to strengthen security measures around the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.
Authorities are seeking to:
Prevent the spread of fake paper leak claims
Restrict unauthorized sharing of exam-related content
Reduce misinformation campaigns
Strengthen confidence in the examination process
Limit the activities of cheating networks
The government has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to ensuring fair and transparent conduct of national-level examinations.
Experts Say Blocking Alone May Not Solve the Problem
While supporting efforts to protect exam integrity, several cybersecurity experts believe that restricting a single platform may not completely address the underlying challenges.
According to experts, users can potentially shift to alternative communication platforms, encrypted channels, or VPN-enabled services.
They argue that long-term solutions should focus on:
Stronger digital monitoring systems
Enhanced cybersecurity measures
Improved examination logistics
Rapid response mechanisms against misinformation
Better detection of organized cheating networks
Experts suggest that technology-driven enforcement may ultimately prove more effective than platform-specific restrictions alone.
NEET-UG 2026 Re-Exam Remains Key Focus
The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination remains one of the most closely watched educational events in the country, involving lakhs of aspiring medical students.
Authorities have implemented multiple safeguards to ensure that the examination proceeds fairly and securely.
Students have been advised to rely only on official communication channels for updates and avoid unverified information circulating on social media platforms.
