General elections are due in Turkey in June of next year. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has started preparing for it. The president gave a speech in the capital Ankara on Friday. It is said that he has presented the vision of the next decade for Turkey. However, it is also being seen as his election manifesto. Indeed, Erdogan has promised a new constitution in the country, which guarantees the rights and freedoms of citizens.
President Erdogan said in his speech that the new constitution would strengthen "the rule of law, pluralism, and equality". However, these have all been seriously weakened under Erdogan's regime in recent years, according to rankings of international organizations.
Turkey at number 117 in the rule of law
Significantly, in 2021, The World Justice Project Rule of Law Index released a report of 139 countries on the rule of law. Turkiye was ranked 117th on this list. Turkey ranks 149th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index prepared by Reporters Without Borders. Other reports claim dictatorships are on the rise in Turkey, while resources are being used to suppress the voices of critics.
At the same time, according to the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report 2022, Turkey is ranked 124 out of 146 countries in terms of inequalities between men and women. One of the main reasons for this is that women's income is on average only 47 percent of men's income.
Erdogan declares 'Turkey's vision centenary'
Erdogan has declared 28 October as the 'Vision Centenary of Turkey. He claimed that the country's 100th anniversary would mark the beginning of the 'Turkish century'. He said that we want to make the 100th anniversary the turning point of a new era, which will change the politics, functioning, and results of the country.
