Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram remained closed for about 6 hours on Monday night. During this, billions of users of all three platforms had to face problems. Twitter was flooded with memes and complaints. This problem came to the fore around 9.15 pm on Monday. This outage has also affected Facebook's stock in the US market and Mark Zuckerberg's earnings.

Do you understand why Facebook was closed? What technical problem caused this problem? Was it a technical problem or was there some other reason behind it and how much damage has been done to Facebook...

Why was Facebook closed?

Since the downing of Facebook, different speculations were being made about its reason. According to cyber experts, the problem was caused by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP).

What is Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)?

In simple language, the Internet works only through the Border Gateway Protocol. The Border Gateway Protocol binds all the networks on the Internet to each other. The Internet is a network of networks. When you open a website, BGP itself finds the way to open the website faster in this network of networks. Due to a problem in BGP, the network path of Facebook could not be found and this became the reason for the downing of Facebook.

Why did this trouble come?

Recently, Facebook made several routing changes, due to which Facebook's Domain Name System (DNS) server was shut down. Think of the DNS server as the directory of the Internet. Every website's address is stored in DNS. When you search any website on the Internet, you enter the domain name, such as www.bhaskar.com. DNS converts this domain name to the IP address of the website. Due to the changes made by Facebook, the DNS server was stopped, due to which this problem came.

Was it just a technical glitch?

This matter is also being linked to digital privacy and cyber security. A few hours before Facebook was down, an interview of Frances Hogan was telecast on the American channel CBS. Frances has been a former Facebook employee and currently leaks reports of Facebook's internal investigations as a whistleblower. Frances alleges that Facebook is harming the public and focusing on making as much profit as possible instead of taking tough measures. Their reports are also being published in the Wall Street Journal under the name 'The Facebook Files' for the last few days.

The downing of Facebook is also being linked to this interview.

What does Facebook have to say on this matter?

Facebook has said in a blog post that this problem has occurred due to a 'faulty configuration change'. This is not a case of any kind of cyber attack or hacking.

Facebook employees told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the problem was caused by a glitch in internal traffic routing.

When Facebook was down, company spokesman Andy Stone said on Twitter that we apologize for the inconvenience caused to people. People are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible.

How much did it hurt Facebook?

The company's stock fell by 4.9% due to Facebook's down. This is the biggest fall in the stock in a single day since November 2020.

Facebook has also suffered a lot in revenue due to this. According to digital ad management firm Standard Media Index, Facebook has lost Rs 4.06 crore every hour due to the down. However, this loss has happened only because of the advertisement. According to different experts, the company has suffered a loss of about Rs 7.50 crore every hour.

It has also affected Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg's assets have decreased by about Rs 52 thousand crores. Due to this loss in wealth, Zuckerberg has dropped from fourth place to fifth in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Other companies like Twitter and Tiktok benefited from Facebook being down. During the shutdown of Facebook, more traffic was seen on Twitter and Tiktok than on normal days.

When was Facebook closed before this?

Even 6 months ago, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook were stalling all over the world for 42 minutes. Then this problem started at 11.05 pm and continued till around 11:47 pm.
