Amid controversy surrounding the trailer of "The Kerala Story 2," slated for release on February 27th, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah has responded to calls for the film to be propaganda, stating that it does not insult Kerala or its people.
Film Facing Severe Criticism
The trailer for the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster original has drawn sharp criticism from filmmakers, political leaders, and social groups, leading to high court notices and a renewed debate on freedom of speech, communal harmony, and the role of cinema in the public eye.
Producer's Response
Responding to calls for the film to be propaganda, producer Amrutlal Shah stated that the film does not target the state of Kerala or its people. He said, "Kerala is God's own country. We are not after Kerala, and the film attempts to highlight what they have described as an evil that must be confronted. We want this evil to be eradicated from that state as soon as possible."
Responding to those who called the film divisive, Shah stated that the team is determined. He said, "No matter how much you criticize us, we will continue to tell the stories of these women. You can call it propaganda if you want, but we stand with the victims and will continue to seek justice for them."
He further warned against ignoring difficult truths. He said, "If you continue to ignore the problems in your state, they will only grow bigger."
Responding to those who called the film propaganda, he said, "Unless something like this happens in your own home, you won't believe it. When I spoke out in 2014, many people called me a liar. But today, the truth is out in the open."
"The Kerala Story 2" revisits the themes of religious conversion and the trapping of innocent girls, with the story spanning Kerala, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The first film sparked a nationwide debate on these issues.
The film's official synopsis reveals that it will address what the makers describe as a larger agenda of manipulative conversion. The film stars Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha in lead roles.
