Abandoned the monarchy for the sake of love: Japan's princess married boyfriend, gave up her royal title

Man leaves everything for love. You must have heard this in tales and stories, but Princess Mako of Japan has proved it to be true. Mako is the daughter of Prince Akishino, brother of the current King Naruhito of Japan. Mako tied the knot with her college boyfriend Kei Komuro on Tuesday. Simultaneously, Mako gave up her royal title, which prevents a member of the royal family from marrying a common man.

IHA submitted registration papers

The wedding of the princess and her boyfriend was officially announced on Tuesday morning after the Imperial Household Agency (IHA), which is responsible for the maintenance of the royal family, submitted important papers to register their marriage at the local marriage office.

Princess breaks traditions, will not take even $ 1.3 million

The newlywed couple broke all the traditions that are an essential part of any royal wedding in Japan. These include the royal reception given after the wedding.

Not only this, but Princess Mako has also refused to accept the amount of 1.3 million dollars (about Rs 7.5 crores) which, according to the tradition of the Japanese dynasty, in exchange for giving up the royal title to a royal woman married outside the royal family. But Mako and Komuro's marriage caused so much controversy that Mako has refused to accept even this compensation.

Marriage postponed for four years due to money scandal

Princess Mako and Komuro officially announced their marriage four years ago. At that time the Japanese people were happy to welcome it. But shortly after, the marriage was postponed after the name of Komuro's mother was involved in a money scandal that surfaced in media reports. After this, in 2018 Komuro moved to New York to study law and from there returned to Japan only in September last month.

Princess will get a passport made for the first time

After marriage, Princess Mako will live with her husband Komuro in New York, USA, for which she will apply for a passport for the first time in her life. Members of the Imperial Family of Japan use diplomatic cards instead of passports to travel to other countries. Because of this, Mako's passport is not made.

Princess Mako, who attended a joint news conference with her husband after the wedding, said that they are ready to build a happy life after recovering from the turmoil after the engagement. He also denounced the media reports that cited Komuro as the cause of his misery and stress.

Let us tell you that four years after their engagement, due to money scandal and tense media trials, Princess Mako became very ill. Earlier this year he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Princess Mako's brother Hisahito is the heir to the throne

In the Japanese dynasty, only men are the heirs to the throne. As such, Princess Mako's younger brother, Prince Hisahito (14), is at present the only claimant to the throne other than his father Akishino. According to Japanese imperial rules, the sons of royal women who married outside the dynasty were not considered heirs to the throne.

Britain's Prince Harry also married outside the dynasty

Earlier, Britain's Prince Harry also married outside the dynasty in 2018. His marriage to American actress Megan Merkel became famous all over the world. After marriage, Harry and Merkel are living in America.
