Amid growing speculations over the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday dismissed all claims of the opposition. He said that Dhankhar has resigned due to health reasons. The opposition's claims that he is under house arrest are baseless and fake. In an interview with ANI, the Union Home Minister said, 'Dhankhar sahab's resignation is clear in itself. He has cited health reasons for his resignation. He has also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister, other ministers, and members of the government for his good tenure.'
'The interpretation of truth and lies should not be based only on the statements of the opposition'
When asked about the claim of Dhankhar being under house arrest by some opposition leaders, Shah said that the interpretation of truth and lies should not be based only on the statements of the opposition. He said, 'It seems that your interpretation of truth and lies is based on the statements of the opposition. We should not make a fuss out of all this. Dhankhar was in a constitutional post and discharged his duties as per the Constitution. He resigned due to personal health reasons. There should not be much discussion on this issue.'
The opposition had made serious allegations
The remarks came after opposition leaders questioned the sudden resignation, claiming that the government had silenced Dhankhar. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that this is the first time in the history of the country that a Vice President has been silenced along with his resignation. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, had also criticised the central government and questioned Dhankhar's whereabouts. He accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of taking the country back to medieval times.
'It is natural to have a candidate from South India for the post of Vice President'
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday supported the NDA's decision to make Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan the candidate for the post of Vice President, saying that it is only natural that this post should be filled by someone from the southern part of India. This is because the President is from East India and the Prime Minister is from West and North India. Shah dismissed speculation that Radhakrishnan's selection had anything to do with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trying to gain leverage in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. The election for the post of vice president is scheduled to be held on September 9, and the counting of votes will also take place on the same day.
