At least five BJP workers were injured after crude bombs were hurled at them in the Panihati area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The police confirmed this information on Thursday. This attack occurred just hours after the murder of Chandranath Rath, a long-time personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari. Police stated that the incident took place shortly after midnight on Datta Road, within Ward No. 2 of the Panihati Municipality.
Three Bombs Hurled in Succession
It has been reported that a group of BJP workers were conversing with local residents when some miscreants arrived at the scene on motorcycles. Eyewitnesses recounted that four individuals riding on the bikes threw bombs at the BJP workers present there. Three bombs were hurled in quick succession, after which the miscreants fled the spot. Five BJP workers sustained serious injuries in this bombing incident.
Tension Grips the Area
The incident has sparked significant tension across the locality. The injured were rushed in critical condition to the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to reports, they are currently undergoing treatment there. Meanwhile, upon receiving news of the incident, officials from the Khardah Police Station immediately arrived at the scene. Central forces also reached the location; they brought the situation under control and conducted patrols throughout the area. The Khardah Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, and CCTV footage from the locality is currently being scrutinized. Additionally, a search operation has been launched to apprehend the culprits.
The Result of 15 Years of ‘Jungle Raj’: Suvendu Adhikari
Reacting to the incident in Madhyamgram, Suvendu Adhikari also referred to the bombing that occurred in Khardah. He stated, “A politics of vendetta has been prevailing in this state for the past 15 years. This is the direct consequence of 15 years of ‘Jungle Raj’ (lawlessness). Last night, a bomb blast occurred in Khardah, and shots were fired at BJP workers in Basirhat. Those responsible for this violence will not be spared.”
The BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the bombing in Panihati—located approximately 7 kilometers from Madhyamgram—where Adhikari’s personal assistant was shot dead by assailants while he was on his way home. It is alleged that miscreants linked to the Trinamool Congress carried out a bomb blast. However, the Trinamool Congress has not issued any official statement regarding this incident.
Reports of Violence Emerge from Several Locations
Since the declaration of the West Bengal Assembly election results on May 4, reports of violence have been pouring in from across the state. In some incidents, Trinamool Congress workers were assaulted; their party offices were vandalized, and party posters were torn down. In other areas, BJP workers were targeted, resulting in injuries to many of them. The police have stated that strict action will be taken against those involved in such activities.
