Several children died in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after consuming toxic cold-cough syrup. The case has reached the Supreme Court. A PIL was filed in the apex court demanding a CBI investigation into the matter.
However, the Supreme Court declined to hear the petition. On Thursday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a petition regarding the deaths of children caused by the syrup. The petition made several points; it also requested a CBI investigation, but the Supreme Court declined.
A bench comprising CJI B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran declined to hear the petition. In the petition, Vishal Tiwari argued that this constituted negligence. The petitioner urged the court to ensure an investigation and accountability, given the seriousness of the matter.
The Central Government's response:
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the petition. He stated that the petition was based solely on news reports he had read in newspapers. He also stated that the petitioner lacked any documents or evidence related to the incident. Therefore, the petition should not be considered.
Court Dismisses Petition
It is noteworthy that during the hearing of this petition, the Supreme Court stated that the bench was willing to consider the matter. However, upon learning that the petitioner had already filed 10 other public interest litigations, the court dismissed the new petition.
