The country's nuclear power capacity has increased by 40% in 8 years. Union Minister Jitendra Singh gave this information in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Singh said that there was a big jump in India's nuclear power capacity after 2014 when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. Annual nuclear power generation was 35,333 million units in 2013-14, to reach 47,112 million units in 2021-22. It has increased by about 30 to 40% in 8 and a half years.

Entry of the private sector into the space department

The minister said- Before the Modi government came, there were only 22 reactors in the country. In 2017, the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Modi approved 11 indigenous heavy water reactors with a cost of Rs 1.05 crore and a total capacity of 7,000 MW.

He further said that the private sector was opened for the Space Department. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also allowed joint ventures to work with government entities (PSUs) to enhance India's nuclear program.

Nuclear power plants are being set up in other states as well.

Singh also told the Rajya Sabha that earlier India's nuclear projects were mostly confined to southern states or Maharashtra and Gujarat in the west, but the Modi government is promoting them in other parts of the country as well. For this, he also gave the example of the nuclear power plant to be built in Gorakhpur city of Haryana.

World's first thorium-based nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu

Responding to another question, Jitendra Singh said that the world's first thorium-based nuclear plant 'Bhavani' using Uranium-233 is being set up at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu. He said- It will be completely indigenous and the first of its kind. At the same time, the thorium plant Kamini is already present in Kalpakkam.
