The government said that people will not suffer the price of onion and pulses during the festive season. Onion and pulses prices will not rise till December due to adequate buffer stock. Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said that the government has a stock of over 2.5 lakh tonnes of onions for 2022-23. In this 54 lakh tonnes of onions have been released to the states.
In the case of pulses, he said that the buffer stock of urad, moong, and masoor in the country is more than 43 lakh tonnes. Keeping in view the demand of different states, 20-27 lakh tonnes of pulses have been imported. In addition, the Center has supplied about 88,000 tonnes of chana dal to the states at Rs 8 less than the market price for the mid-day meal and other welfare schemes. The Secretary said that the all-India average retail price of onions has come down by 28 percent as compared to last year.
A minor effect of unseasonal rain
The Secretary said that the unseasonal rains may have had a minor impact on the Kharif onion production, but due to the buffer stock, we will overcome this shortfall. Based on the prices in the local areas, onions are being launched from the buffer stock in the market, he said. About 54,000 tonnes of onions have been released to 14 states and union territories from the national buffer stock so far.
The government has offered to states/UTs, Mother Dairy, Safal, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar to lift onions at the rate of Rs 800 per quintal from the central buffer stock.
Tomatoes and potatoes are perishable goods. Therefore, their prices may fluctuate, but the government is constantly monitoring their prices.
