Flood in Punjab: Relief and rehabilitation work continues on a war footing, 29 people have lost their lives in 12 districts

Punjab Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian said that incessant rains and floods have caused heavy destruction in the state, causing severe damage to life and property, crops, livestock, and infrastructure. But the Punjab government is working hard to deal with this situation and provide immediate relief to the affected people.

Giving details of relief operations, the Revenue Minister said that Punjab is grappling with the flood situation, and large-scale relief operations are going on in the affected districts. He said that, as per reports received from the districts, a total of 15,688 persons have been evacuated to safer places so far. These include 5,549 people from Gurdaspur, 3,321 from Ferozepur, 2,049 from Fazilka, 1,139 from Pathankot, 1,700 from Amritsar, and 1,052 from Hoshiarpur. Apart from this, 25 people from Barnala, 515 from Kapurthala, 60 from Tarn Taran, 115 from Moga, and 163 from Mansa have been shifted to safer places.

129 camps set up across Punjab

Hardeep Singh Mundian informed that relief and rehabilitation work is going on in full swing, and 129 camps have been set up across Punjab to immediately accommodate homeless families. These include 16 camps in Amritsar, 1 in Barnala, 10 in Fazilka, 8 in Ferozepur, 25 in Gurdaspur, 20 in Hoshiarpur, 4 in Kapurthala, 1 in Mansa, 9 in Moga, 14 in Pathankot, 1 in Sangrur and 20 camps in district Patiala. He further said that the state government has directed the district administration to ensure food, medical aid, and essential facilities in these centres.

He informed that at present a total of 7,144 persons have been accommodated in relief camps across the state. Of these, the highest number of persons have been accommodated in relief camps in Ferozepur (3,987), Fazilka (1,201), Hoshiarpur (478), Pathankot (411), Gurdaspur (424), Amritsar (170), Mansa (163), Moga (115), Kapurthala (110), Sangrur (60) and Barnala (25).

He further informed that a total of 1,044 villages in 12 districts of the state have been affected. According to district-wise details, the highest number of persons accommodated in relief camps are in Amritsar (88 villages), Barnala (24), Fazilka (72), Ferozepur (76), Gurdaspur (321), Hoshiarpur (94), Jalandhar (55), Kapurthala (115), Mansa (77), Moga (39), Pathankot (82) and SAS. 1 village of the city has been affected.

Gurdaspur worst affected

Hardeep Singh Mundian said that according to reports received from the Deputy Commissioners, a total of 2,56,107 people have been affected by the floods in various districts of Punjab. Gurdaspur district has been the worst affected, where 1,45,000 people have been affected. Apart from this, 35,000 people were affected in Amritsar, 24,015 in Ferozepur, and 21,562 in Fazilka. He further said that 15,053 people have also been affected in Pathankot, while 7,000 and 5,650 people were affected in SAS Nagar and Kapurthala, respectively. Other less affected districts include Barnala (59), Mansa (163), Jalandhar (653), Moga (800), and Hoshiarpur (1,152).

Regarding the deployment of the army, the Revenue Minister said that many agencies are providing help. Out of the total 20 NDRF teams in the state, 1 team has been deployed in Pathankot (1), Gurdaspur (6), Amritsar (6), Ferozepur (3), Fazilka (3), and Bathinda (1). 10 contingents of Air Force, Navy, and Army have been deployed along with 8 contingents kept on standby. Apart from this, 2 engineering teams have also been deployed.

The Cabinet Minister said that a total of 114 boats and 1 helicopter of the state have also been deployed for evacuation and relief operations.

29 people died

He informed that 29 persons have lost their lives in 12 districts from 1st August to 1st September 2025 due to floods. According to the district-wise report, Amritsar (3 persons), Barnala (3), Bathinda (1), Gurdaspur (1), Hoshiarpur (3), Ludhiana (3), Mansa (3), Pathankot (6), Patiala (1), Rupnagar (3), S.A.S. Nagar (1), and Sangrur (1 person). Besides, 3 people are missing in Pathankot.

The Revenue Minister informed that the floods have also caused heavy damage to agricultural land and a total of 94,061 hectares of cropped area have been affected in various districts. The worst affected districts include Amritsar (23,000 hectares), Mansa (17,005 hectares), Kapurthala (14,934 hectares), Tarn Taran (11,883 hectares), Ferozepur (11,232 hectares), Hoshiarpur (5,971 hectares), Jalandhar (2,800 hectares), Pathankot (2,442 hectares), S.A.S. Nagar (2,000 hectares), Patiala (1,450 hectares), Moga (949 hectares), Ludhiana (108 hectares), Bathinda (97 hectares) and Sri Muktsar Sahib (84 hectares). Besides, the less affected areas include Fazilka (64 hectares), Gurdaspur (24 hectares), S.B.S. Nagar (7 hectares), Malerkotla (5 hectares), Sangrur (3 hectares), Barnala (2 hectares), and Fatehgarh Sahib (1 hectare).
