Gold and silver prices declined on September 21, 2026, with both precious metals continuing to see sharp fluctuations during the year. According to the figures cited from the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), the price of 24-carat gold fell by ₹671 to around ₹1.53 lakh per 10 grams, while silver declined by ₹2,346 to around ₹2.35 lakh per kilogram.
IBJA describes its gold and silver prices as benchmark bullion rates. These rates are quoted before GST and making charges, meaning the final price paid by a jewellery buyer can be higher.
Gold Price in 2026: ₹20,000 Higher Than December 2025
Despite Monday's decline, gold remains substantially more expensive than at the end of 2025.
Gold was around ₹1.33 lakh per 10 grams on December 31, 2025, compared with approximately ₹1.53 lakh now, representing an increase of about ₹20,000 per 10 grams. The metal has also experienced considerable volatility during 2026.
Gold reached a reported peak of around ₹1.76 lakh per 10 grams on January 29, before subsequently correcting from that level.
Silver has also moved sharply during the year. It was around ₹2.30 lakh per kilogram at the end of 2025 and subsequently touched a reported high of approximately ₹3.86 lakh per kilogram on January 29.
Gold, Silver Price Outlook: What Could Happen by December?
Market participants continue to monitor central-bank purchases, interest-rate expectations, currency movements, geopolitical developments and investment demand for clues about the next move in precious metals.
Anindya Banerjee, Senior Vice President and Head of Commodity Research at Kotak Securities, has pointed to continued support for gold from investors and central banks, including the Reserve Bank of India. A market outlook citing Banerjee's projection puts gold at potentially around ₹1.70 lakh per 10 grams by December, while silver could move towards ₹3 lakh per kilogram if supportive conditions persist.
These are market projections, not guaranteed prices. Actual gold and silver rates can move significantly depending on global economic conditions, interest rates, currency movements, geopolitical developments and investor demand.
Gold Buying: Check These Two Things Before Purchasing
Consumers planning to buy gold jewellery should pay attention to purity and the total cost rather than relying only on the headline bullion rate.
1. Check the BIS Hallmark
Buyers should look for the appropriate BIS hallmark and purity details when purchasing hallmarked gold jewellery. The hallmark provides information about the purity of the gold. Buyers should also verify the hallmark details through official BIS channels where applicable.
2. Compare the Gold Rate and Final Bill
Before purchasing, check the day's benchmark gold rate and verify the weight, purity, gold value, making charges, GST and other applicable costs shown on the invoice.
IBJA rates are useful as a benchmark, but they are published without GST and making charges. The final retail price can therefore differ from the IBJA bullion rate.
