In view of the rising temperatures and the severe heatwave situation in the capital, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has conducted a detailed review of the ‘Heatwave Action Plan 2026’ and issued directives to further enhance its effectiveness.
The Chief Minister clarified that, compared to previous years, the government has adopted a more scientific and effective strategy this year, with special attention being paid to the well-being of school children and laborers working at construction sites.
Additionally, special directives have been issued to various departments to ensure the availability of water for birds and animals. Special teams are also being deployed to assist victims of the heatwave.
Safety Shield for School Children and Laborers
The Chief Minister stated that, to protect school children from the heat and heatwaves, they would—if deemed necessary—be administered an ORS solution at school before being sent home for the day, thereby eliminating the risk of dehydration during their commute.
In instances of severe heatwaves, laborers working at construction sites will be provided not only with water at their workplaces but also with caps and gamchas (light cotton towels) for protection against the sun, along with medical assistance whenever required. A complete ban will be imposed on all outdoor work between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
Special Directives for Uninterrupted Power Supply
Emphasizing the vulnerability of Delhi’s thermal hotspots and urban heat island zones, the Delhi government noted that a concerning trend has been observed over the past 2–3 years, wherein temperatures in the city consistently remain above 40 degrees Celsius for periods of up to 40 days.
It is projected that during the current season, Delhi’s peak power demand will exceed the 9,000 MW mark—a figure significantly higher than last year’s peak demand of 8,442 MW.
In light of this massive demand, the Chief Minister has issued strict directives to power distribution companies, making it clear that any power cuts or supply interruptions will not be tolerated. Furthermore, taking into account the rising temperatures, the Chief Minister has directed all government departments to ensure the availability of water and shade for animals and birds.
Steps Taken Under the Cool Roof Policy
Under the ‘Cool Roof Policy 2026’, the Delhi government has completed the application of reflective coating across approximately 28,674 square feet of roof area at the Kashmiri Gate Inter-State Bus Terminus, a measure designed to keep the indoor temperature of the building low.
Additionally, more than 339 health centers across all 13 districts have been placed on alert, and specialized ‘5-bed cool rooms’ have been set up in over 30 hospitals.
