India has given 75 passenger buses to cash-strapped Sri Lanka to strengthen public transport infrastructure. India has given this assistance to Sri Lanka under its 'Neighbourhood First' policy to overcome the worst economic and humanitarian crisis since its independence from Britain in 1948. The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka said, 'Intending to support mobility and accessibility in Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner has handed over 75 buses for use by the Transport Board. Sri Lanka Police were given 125 SUVs
It may be noted that earlier in December, under the Line of Credit, India had handed over 125 SUVs to the Sri Lankan Police. India has provided this assistance to solve the difficulties being faced by the police in their movement due to the lack of vehicles. India announced a USD 900 million loan to Sri Lanka in January to build up its depleted foreign reserves after the financial crisis surfaced.
India offered a credit line
India offered a US$ 500 million line of credit to Sri Lanka for fuel purchases. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the credit line was later enhanced to US$ 700 million. It is to be known that since the beginning of 2022, the Indian credit line is being used to import essentials and fuel after street protests due to an acute shortage of essential commodities.
