India needs anti-Congress, anti-BJP government: Yechury

Guwahati, March 27 (IANS) India needs an anti-Congress as well as anti-BJP central government to give people much required relief, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury Thursday said that the country needs

"The main feeling among the people is that they need relief from the burden which are slapped on them. The quality of life is declining and people are suffering.

"The only way we can change this is by reversing the current set of economic policies and it can be done only when there is an alternative government at the centre," said Yechury in a media interaction at the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) headquarters here.

"There is not much difference between the BJP and Congress. Both the Congress and BJP gives tax concessions to the rich and several concessions are granted to the corporate houses.

"At the same time they cut the subsidies for the poor. India has no dearth of resources but both these parties are using the resources to give concessions to the rich and the corporate," he said adding the poor of the country are suffering due to these kinds of wrong policies.

Expressing confidence over formation of the country's next government by an anti-Congress and anti-Bharatiya Janata Party, he said: "We are working for an alternative government that can alter the policies in India."

The dominant mood in the country at present is to keep the BJP and the Congress away from the government, he said.

Asked on the Modi wave in the country, Yechury, a CPI-M politburo member, asked: "Where is the wave?

"If there is the Modi wave why then Modi is shifting his constituency and contesting from Varanasi, which, is a Hindu consolidated constituency?" he said, terming it "straightforward communalization of politics".

Asked about the party's stand on the statehood demand of various ethnic groups in Assam, Yechury noted that his party had also opposed the Telengana bill in parliament.

"We have said that this (statehood demands) will open a Pandora's Box in the northeast. However, both the Congress and BJP supported it. I don't think that is a solution. In Tripura, we have the Autonomous District Council (ADC) model, which have been working properly for over two decades now," he said, adding that the Tripura's model will work in Assam too.
