Ahead of IPL 2026, when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) CEO Rajesh Menon announced in a press conference that ticket sales would commence at 4:00 PM, fans wasted no time whatsoever in snapping them up. Tickets for RCB’s opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) sold out within just four minutes.
Fans are poised to return to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium—10 months after a tragic incident outside the venue claimed the lives of 11 people. However, the question now arises: Is the stadium truly ready to host the opening match of the 19th IPL season?
The Pitch is Ready, But Other Work Remains
According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, while the playing field itself was fully prepared, sheets of plywood lay scattered near the entry gates. Masons, carpenters, contractors, and vendors were all working feverishly to put the finishing touches on the stadium. On Wednesday evening, the Chinnaswamy Stadium bore a striking resemblance to a construction site.
Work Was Due to Be Completed by March 15
Following the tragedy that occurred on June 4 last year, extensive infrastructural modifications became necessary at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Karnataka State Cricket Association decided to implement major changes to the exit gates and spectator areas. However, construction work is still ongoing at the stadium; no section of the venue appears to be fully completed yet, despite the fact that the deadline for the stadium’s readiness was March 15.
The Echo of Drilling, Welding, and Hammering
According to the report, temporary pathways have been constructed within the new concourse area to facilitate fan movement. Walls and gates still awaited their final coats of paint. The air was filled with the ceaseless sounds of drilling, welding, and hammering, punctuated occasionally by the crunching of cement and the rustling of sawdust.
“We haven’t slept in four days,” remarked one laborer. Venkatesh Prasad noted that he, too, hasn’t enjoyed a moment of peaceful sleep over the past few months—all as they strove to meet the March 15 deadline for completing the construction work. However, as is often the case, the work has fallen behind schedule.
No Opening Ceremony
On Saturday, March 28, Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening match of IPL 2026 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. There will be no opening ceremony on this day. The BCCI is paying tribute to the souls lost in the stampede. Additionally, 11 seats in the stadium will remain vacant during the match.
