The opposition has started brainstorming regarding the presidential election. All the opposition parties together want to field a joint candidate. Earlier, the name of Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar was running for this but it is reported that he has refused to contest the elections. There will be a meeting of opposition parties in Delhi on Wednesday in which a strategy can be prepared in this regard. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called this meeting in which the top leadership of CPI(M) and CPI will not attend.
Sharad Pawar refuses to be a presidential candidate
Before the meeting, Mamta met NCP leader Sharad Pawar on Tuesday and discussed the strategy related to the presidential election. Sharad Pawar made it clear in this meeting that he is not ready to be the joint candidate of the opposition. On the other hand, the Congress and the Left parties have decided to join it to prevent any split in the opposition camp, despite being uneasy about the meeting called by Didi as part of the exercise to hold the reins of the opposition.
Didi is restless because of the absence of many opposition leaders and chief ministers.
Despite taking the lead in declaring the meeting of opposition leaders on the Presidential election, the information about the absence of many top leaders of the opposition and Chief Ministers have made Didi restless. That is why as soon as she reached Delhi, Mamta first reached Pawar's house to meet him. The picture was shared by Pawar himself on Twitter. According to sources, during this, Pawar also made it clear to Mamata that he was not willing to be the joint candidate of the opposition. Everyone has to come together to agree on a new candidate. After meeting Pawar, CPI leader D Raja also said that the NCP chief has refused to be a presidential candidate.
Discussion of making Ghulam Nabi Azad a candidate
Pawar also tried to convince Didi that the presidential election should be avoided as a political motive to take over the reins of the opposition leadership. It is being told that Pawar is exploring the possibility of making Ghulam Nabi Azad, the leader of the disgruntled Congress party, on his behalf as the opposition candidate. He understood the intentions of both the leaders of the Left parties and Mamta. However, even under compulsion, Mamata Banerjee's proposed meeting on Wednesday will be the opposition's first formal consultation on the presidential election, following the message of Congress and Left parties to join the meeting for the sake of opposition unity. It is unlikely that any other big Chief Minister of the opposition camp will be involved in this.
Nomination for the Presidential election will start today
The nomination process for the presidential election begins on Wednesday. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat has constituted a special cell for the elections following the instructions of the Election Commission. Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Modi has been made the Returning Officer for the elections on July 18. Officer on Special Duty Mukul Pandey and Joint Secretary in Rajya Sabha Secretariat Surendra Tripathi has been made Assistant Returning Officers.
