RG Kar case: Mamata government reaches High Court against the decision of Sealdah court, gets permission to file appeal

The West Bengal government on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Calcutta High Court requesting the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and killing a female doctor at RG Kar Hospital. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced to challenge in the High Court the sentence of imprisonment till death by the Sealdah court. The state government has taken this step in less than 24 hours of the Chief Minister's announcement.

 

Advocate General Kishore Dutta filed a petition before a division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Mohammad Shabbar Rashidi on Tuesday morning to challenge the order passed by Sealdah Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das. An official said, the government has approached the High Court and has obtained the court's permission to file an appeal. High Court sources said that if the process of filing the appeal is completed by Tuesday, the judicial process related to the case can start this week.

 

Mamata said - If he escaped after committing the crime, he would do it again.

 

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the incident as a rare, heinous, and sensitive crime and said that if someone escapes after committing a crime, he will do it again and it is not our job to protect him. She said that she is demanding the death penalty for the culprit.

 

Banerjee said in Malda, if someone is so demonic and barbaric, how can society remain humane? We passed the Aparajita Bill, but the Center is sitting on it. We have included the death penalty in that bill and we want it to become a model for the country. If someone is sentenced to life imprisonment, then that person can be released on parole. I have been an advocate and I have fought many cases. The judge of the Sealdah court said that this is not the rarest of rare cases and the death penalty cannot be given. If this is not the rarest of rare cases then what else is it?
