For the first time in the ongoing IPL season, the Lucknow Super Giants’ pace battery appeared to be in full rhythm.
In a crucial match held on Wednesday at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, the experienced trio of Mohammed Shami, Prince Yadav, and Mohsin Khan fulfilled their responsibilities with brilliant bowling, restricting a formidable team like the Rajasthan Royals to 159 runs. However, the batsmen once again let the team down miserably, resulting in a crushing defeat for LSG—their seventh consecutive loss at home and their fifth of the current season.
In response to the target of 160 runs, the Lucknow team failed to even complete their allotted overs, folding for 119 runs in just 18 overs. The Rajasthan Royals displayed a balanced performance, successfully defending a modest target on a batting-friendly pitch. Thanks to the abysmal batting efforts of Captain Rishabh Pant, Vice-Captain Nicholas Pooran, and Aiden Markram, the path to the playoffs has now become significantly more difficult for LSG.
Pant, Pooran, and Markram Sink the Team’s Ship
Last year, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram shouldered the responsibility of being regular openers for the Lucknow Super Giants, providing the team with strong starts in numerous matches. However, this time around, the LSG management has been experimenting with the batting order right from the start—a strategy that has failed to yield positive results. For the last three matches, Ayush Badoni has partnered with Marsh, yet he has managed to succeed in only one of those games.
When Lucknow’s bowlers restricted the Rajasthan Royals to 159 runs, their supporters likely felt confident that the team would chase down the target with ease; however, the batting lineup—from the top order right down to the middle order—failed completely. The situation was so dire that with the team’s total score standing at a mere 11 runs, Lucknow’s top three batsmen—Ayush Badoni (00), Rishabh Pant (00), and Aiden Markram (00)—had already returned to the pavilion. From that point onward, the road to reaching the target became an arduous uphill battle for the host team.
Nicholas Pooran proved to be a disappointment for the seventh consecutive match, struggling to score just 22 runs off 25 deliveries. Throughout this period, not a single shot of his displayed any confidence. Pooran has managed to score only 73 runs across seven matches, whereas Pant has tallied 147 runs in the same number of games.
The team had high hopes for substantial innings from Himmat Singh (15) and Mukul Chaudhary (07), but neither of them could produce anything spectacular. However, Mitchell Marsh (55)—who stood firm at one end—kept hopes alive; yet, the moment he was dismissed, the stands in the stadium began to empty out.
In his gritty innings, Marsh struck six fours and two sixes off 41 deliveries. Much like in previous matches, Lucknow felt the absence of a significant partnership in this contest as well. The Rajasthan bowlers—particularly Jofra Archer—delivered an exceptional performance. They also received ample support from Burger and Brijesh Sharma. These three bowlers effectively prevented the Lucknow batsmen from settling in at the crease.
Yashasvi and Suryavanshi Fail; Jadeja Shines
Earlier, LSG won the toss and elected to field first. Left-handed batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal (22) and Vaibhav Suryavanshi (08) began their innings in their signature style. Rajasthan had raced to 32 runs in just 2.4 overs, but Mohammed Shami orchestrated a spirited comeback for Lucknow by claiming back-to-back wickets on the fifth and final deliveries of his second—and the match’s third—over.
He dealt a severe blow to Rajasthan by first having the dangerous-looking Yashasvi caught behind the stumps, followed immediately by the dismissal of the new batsman, Dhruv Jurel, in the same manner. Buoyed by these two consecutive successes, Rishabh Pant made a bowling change, bringing left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan into the attack.
Mohsin did not disappoint his captain; on the final ball of his very first over, he secured Lucknow’s third wicket by having star batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi caught by Digvesh Rathi. Rathi pulled off a difficult catch, running backward approximately 19 meters in the outfield to complete the dismissal.
With four wickets down for just 62 runs after nine overs, the Rajasthan Royals found themselves in deep trouble. Captain Riyan Parag (20) and Hetmyer (22) also returned to the pavilion early. Subsequently, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, coming in to bat at number five, not only played an unbeaten innings of 43 runs but also proved to be the team’s savior. During his initial individual score of 20 runs, not a single boundary had come off Jadeja’s bat; however, he remained confident in his batting abilities.
Prince Yadav and Mohsin Khan fulfilled their responsibilities with a magnificent bowling display, restricting a formidable team like the Rajasthan Royals to 159 runs; however, the batsmen once again let the team down, resulting in a crushing defeat for LSG—their seventh consecutive loss at home and fifth of the current season.
