Ukraine's President Zelensky has pledged to completely drive him out of his country while on the front foot following the retreat of Russian forces from Kherson. The strategically important city was occupied by Russian forces for nearly eight months. Russia gave up its stronghold in this big city. When Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, Kherson was one of the first places to be captured.
The residents of Kherson, expressing happiness over the development, embraced the Ukrainian soldiers. "We will see many more such honors happen to Ukrainian soldiers who liberated Russian-occupied territory," President Zelensky said in his video address on Saturday night. Promised, "We don't forget anyone; And we will liberate every region." Ukraine's recapture of Kherson is a major blow to Russian troops.
Ukraine's military position strengthened
The Ukrainian army tightened its hold on Kherson on Sunday. Authorities have begun discussions on removing the explosive devices and restoring basic public services in the city. A Ukrainian official described the situation in Kherson as "a humanitarian disaster". It is being told that the remaining residents of the city are short of electricity, water, medicine, and food. Ukrainian police have called on residents to help identify allies of the Russian military during the eight-month occupation. Ukrainian police officers returned to the city on Saturday after the withdrawal of Russian troops.
Ukraine's ministers are winning the battle on the ground
Ukraine's national police chief, Ihor Klymenko, said on Facebook on Saturday that about 200 officers were working in the city and checkpoints were being set up. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba said in Cambodia, "We are winning the battle on the ground, but the war continues." Kuleba in Cambodia to attend a conference of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have gone. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters on Sunday that a joint statement on the outcome of the summit was not accepted because "the US side and its allies insisted on an unacceptable assessment of the situation in and around Ukraine." The Kremlin is angered by the support Ukraine has received from its Western allies, including the US.
