This decrease in efficacy was reported to be due to the vaccine being less effective over time and not because of the highly infectious variant.

The Pfizer vaccine against the delta variant is up to 93 percent effective up to one month after vaccination, reducing its effectiveness to 53 percent at four months, while its efficacy against the other variant is down from 97 percent to 67 percent.
