Voting is taking place in the country today for the first phase. Eight Union ministers, two former chief ministers, and one former governor are also trying their luck in the first phase of elections. Today i.e. on 19th April, voting started for 102 Lok Sabha seats in 21 states. In the first phase, 1625 candidates have contested the elections. Let us know those high-profile seats across the country from where veteran leaders are in the electoral fray...

 

Nagpur Lok Sabha seat

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is contesting from the Nagpur seat of Maharashtra. Gadkari's fate will be decided in EVMs on the evening of 19th April. In 2014, Gadkari defeated seven-time MP Vilas Muttemwar for the first time by 2.84 lakh votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate Nana Patole was defeated by 2.16 lakh votes.

Arunachal West

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is contesting from the Arunachal West seat. Rijiju has been MP from this seat thrice since 2004. He is pitted against former Chief Minister and current Arunachal Pradesh Congress President Nabam Tuki.

 

Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is contesting from the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat in Assam. In place of Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameshwar Teli, the BJP has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sonowal from Dibrugarh.

 

Muzaffarnagar Lok Sabha seat

This time the contest is triangular in Muzaffarnagar, the high-profile seat of Uttar Pradesh. Union Minister Sanjeev Baliyan is contesting elections from here. He is facing competition from Samajwadi Party's Harendra Malik and BSP candidate Dara Singh Prajapati.

 

Udhampur Lok Sabha seat

Jitendra Singh, a two-time MP and minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet, is trying his luck for the third time from the Udhampur seat of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

Alwar Lok Sabha seat

There is also an election in the first phase on the Alwar seat of Rajasthan. Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav is contesting elections from here. Congress has fielded MLA Lalit Yadav in front of him. In 2019, Baba Balak Nath won the Lok Sabha elections from here.

 

Bikaner Lok Sabha seat

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is contesting from former Congress minister Govind Ram Meghwal from Bikaner parliamentary seat of Rajasthan.

 

Union Minister's challenge to A Raja

DMK MP and former Union Minister A Raja is in the electoral fray from Nilgiri Lok Sabha constituency of Tamil Nadu. He is pitted against Union Minister L Murugan. In the Sivagangai seat, sitting MP Karti Chidambaram is contesting against BJP's T Devanathan Yadav and AIADMK's Xavier Das.

Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai is trying his luck from Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency. Here he faces DMK leader Ganapathy P. Rajkumar and AIADMK's Singai Ramachandran.

 

Former governor in the election field here

Tamilisai Soundararajan, who resigned from the post of Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and Governor of Telangana, is contesting from Chennai South Lok Sabha constituency.

 

Former Chief Minister in the election fray in Tripura

Elections for the West Tripura seat are to be held in the first phase on April 19Here a high-voltage clash will be seen between former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and State Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha.

 

All eyes on this seat of Assam

Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Jorhat seat of Assam. In 2019, BJP's Tapan Kumar Gogoi had won from here. Manipur Law and Education Minister Basant Kumar Singh is the BJP candidate from the Inner Manipur constituency and is pitted against JNU professor and Congress candidate Bimal Akoizam.
