Twitter: India has the highest demand for removal of tweets of journalists, second only to America

Social media company Twitter claims that in the second half of last year, India had made the highest demand for removal of tweets of verified journalists and media organizations. India was also included in the top five countries that banned all types of user content.

 

 

Twitter said in the transparency report, between July and December 2021, there were demands to remove the content of 349 accounts linked to journalists and media organizations from around the world. It was 103% higher than January to June 2021. This tremendous growth was due to demands from India (114), Turkey (78), Russia (55) and Pakistan (48). In the first half of last year also, India was on top with 89 demands.

India ranked second after the US in seeking information on Twitter accounts. Globally, its share stood at 19 per cent. Japan, France and Germany are also among the top five countries with the most government requests for information.

 

2,211 regular requests were made.

 

A total of 2,211 regular requests for 7,768 accounts were received from India between July and December 2021. Globally, this number stood at 11,460.

 

Eight percent demand for removal of material from India

 

Of the 47,572 requests for removal of content worldwide, 3,992 (eight percent) came from India alone. These included 23 court orders and 3,969 other legal demands.
