WB State Universities Chancellor: The West Bengal Assembly has passed a bill to replace Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar with CM Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of the state's universities. The West Bengal government on Monday introduced a bill seeking to replace the governor with chief ministers of 31 state-run universities, even as the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged massive protests to block the proposed law.

The bill got 182 votes in favor and 40 votes against. After which the bill was passed in the assembly. During this, there was a heated debate between the opposition and the side in the assembly. Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and six other BJP leaders, who were barred from attending the assembly proceedings on disciplinary grounds, staged a protest outside the House against the bill and its ban. We will see how the government passes the bill, said Suvendu Adhikari. We are sitting outside but other BJP MLAs will challenge its legality during the debate. Even if the Trinamool Congress (TMC) manages to pass it because of its strength, the governor will surely send the bill to the Center as education is a subject on the concurrent list.

What did Trinamool Congress MLAs say?

On the other hand, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Madan Mitra said that the primary school may have become secondary if CM Mamta had come 5 years earlier, the condition of Bengal would have changed, these governors do nothing, take empty money and go to Rajasthan and Delhi to Bengal. is called abusive. They roam in Darjeeling with the tax money of the people of Bengal. In West Bengal's 294-member house, BJP has 70 members while TMC has 217 members. This bill requires the assent of the governor. TMC ministers have said that if the governor does not approve the bill, they can bring an ordinance. Ordinances also require the approval of the Governor.

There was a tussle going on between the state government and the governor

Let us inform you that, on June 6, the West Bengal cabinet had given its approval on Monday to the proposal to make Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee the chancellor of all government universities in the state in place of Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. This step has been taken after the ongoing tussle between the state government and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar over the appointment of vice-chancellors in universities. According to reports, Governor Dhankhar had earlier alleged that the state government had appointed several vice-chancellors without his consent.

Gujarat was mentioned

Earlier, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have passed legislation empowering state governments to appoint vice-chancellors of state-funded universities. But the governor remains the chancellor. Tamil Nadu passed its law in April, seven years after Gujarat did so in 2015. West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee also raised this issue in the assembly and questioned how the BJP which passed this law in Gujarat can oppose it in Bengal.

Governor calls it a ploy to divert attention from the recruitment scam

On May 29, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had called the law a ploy to divert attention from a school recruitment scam, which the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed in the Calcutta High Court. Investigating as per instructions. Dhankhar had said that the government would not be able to pass the bill easily. Who becomes the Chancellor and whether the role of the Governor can be reduced, are the things which I will examine when the papers come to me. This is a ploy, a strategy to generate media optics, to divert attention from what is happening in the recruitment scam. It is the mother of all scams.
