Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday recalled this dark day of democracy on the 49th anniversary of the Emergency. He said that today is the day to pay tribute to all those great men and women who opposed the Emergency. He said that the dark day of the Emergency reminds us how the Congress Party destroyed fundamental freedoms and trampled the Constitution of India, which every Indian respects immensely.
The country was turned into a prison
PM Modi said that to hold on to power, the then Congress government disregarded every democratic principle and turned the country into a prison. Everyone who disagreed with the Congress was tortured. The most vulnerable sections were targeted and socially regressive policies were implemented.
No right to show love for the Constitution
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that those who imposed the Emergency have no right to show their love for our Constitution. These are the same people who imposed Article 356 on countless occasions, passed a bill that took away press freedom, destroyed federalism, and violated every aspect of the Constitution.
The same mindset still exists in Congress
He said that the mindset that led to the imposition of the Emergency still exists in Congress. They hide their disdain for the Constitution through their pretensions but the people of India have understood their actions. This is why the public has rejected them time and again.
