Shreyas Iyer: The doors of the Indian team are getting closed for middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, who is not able to score runs despite being given repeated opportunities. BCCI and selectors are not happy with Shreyas's performance and he may be dropped from the team in the third Test match to be held in Rajkot from February 15.
Shreyas could only score 27 and 29 runs in the two innings of the Visakhapatnam Test and his consistent failure has put his place in the team in danger. Iyer does not have a single half-century in his last 13 Test innings. He scored his last half-century in the Dhaka Test against Bangladesh in December 2022. The team management can now try Sarfaraz Khan, who is consistently scoring runs in domestic cricket, in his place.
Sarfaraz Khan may get a chance in place of Shreyas Iyer
Sarfaraz Khan had recently played a brilliant inning of 161 runs against the England Lions and he was included in the Indian team in place of KL Rahul. BCCI sources said that Shreyas has been given many chances and now the team management will have to take a tough decision. The patience of the selectors regarding Shreyas is also paying off.
Now his poor performance against England has put a question mark on his place in the Test team. If we look at Shreyas's Test career, he has played 13 matches in this format, and in 22 innings he has been able to score only 755 runs at an average of 37.75, which includes only one century and five half-centuries. If we look at his 10 Test innings before the Visakhapatnam Test, his highest score was 35 runs.
Iyer can be seen playing domestic cricket
It is believed that Iyer may be asked to play domestic cricket. Earlier, Ishan Kishan has also been asked by the team management to make a comeback after playing domestic cricket.
Gill had been given an ultimatum
Earlier, after being out for zero in the second innings of the Hyderabad Test, Gill was given an ultimatum by the team management that this would be his last opportunity to prove himself at number three in Visakhapatnam. If he fails then he will have to be ready to play domestic cricket.
In fact, before the start of the third Test in Rajkot, Gill had a week to overcome his shortcomings by playing domestic cricket. If he had not scored a century in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, he might have reached Mohali, where the Punjab team has to play a Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat from February 9.
Gill had managed only 153 runs in his last nine innings with a top score of 36 and his place in the Test team was in danger. Recently, former Indian captain Anil Kumble had also raised questions on Gill's performance. Kumble had said that Cheteshwar Pujara never got the kind of security that Gill, who was struggling with poor form, had. Whereas Ravi Shastri had said that you should keep in mind that Pujara is waiting outside and he has had a great Ranji season.
