In Nagmani village under Patera block of Damoh district, on the day of Nagpanchami, there is no embroidery on the stove. If someone puts a pan on the stove, immediately black snakes appear. Hundreds of black snakes keep roaming in this village, but to date, they have not harmed anyone. For years, the people of this village, following the tradition of their forefathers, go to the temple on the day of Nag Panchami, make dal, baati, and offer food to Nagdev. On this day, in any house of the village, no pan is offered on the stove nor any dish is prepared.
It is said that many years ago when a woman tried to make a dish, hundreds of cobras came out in her house. Frightened people reached the temple and apologized to Nagdev, then all the snakes from the house got buried in the ground. The people of the village believe that Nagdev himself protects the people of their village, so no one in the village gets scared seeing a snake.
The elders of the village tell that there is a statue of Nagdev's couple in their village and the name of their village is also Nagmani. Their forefathers have realized the power of Nagdev, so they are also following the belief of their forefathers. It is also a belief of this village that many years ago, on the day of Nagpanchami someone put a pan on the stove to make a dish, then a cobra fell into it and died;
70-year-old Bhupat Tiwari said that his forefathers had told him that many years ago, as soon as someone in the village put a pan on the stove to prepare a dish on the day of Nagpanchami, hundreds of snakes suddenly appeared in the house. Whereas they knew that embroidery is not offered on this day. When the family members went to the temple and apologized, the snake disappeared from the house. 66-year-old Laxman Singh said that the black cobra is not killed here but protects the village and to date, no one in the village has been harmed by the cobra and no one has died due to snake bite.
It is the tradition of the village that on the day of Nagpanchami, dishes are not prepared in anyone's house and the pan is not put on the stove, if this is done then Nagdev appears in no time. Shekhar Singh Thakur told that earlier there was a shrine built here that had the idol of Nagdev. About two decades ago the village sarpanch got the temple constructed here and since then the idol of Nagdev is inside the temple where people come to worship. Sometimes snakes come out from above people but do not harm anyone. If guests also come to someone's house on the day of Nagpanchami, then they are also fed bati, but dishes are not prepared.
