The bad economic condition has taken away all the swagger of Pakistan and now it has reached almost begging conditions for talks with India. Let us tell you that a former top Pakistani army officer has said that Pakistan must talk with India. Major General (Retd) Athar Abbas, former Director General of the Pakistan Army wing ISPR, also participated in the concluding day of the 14th Karachi Literature Festival.
During the program, the former DG of Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) said that dialogue is a need for the country in today's time. It is not just the job of the government or the army to take the dialogue forward. Because if you leave all the responsibility to them then the matter will not move forward. He said that it can be started through media, business, and trade. This will create an environment for dialogue in Indian society. Due to this, there will be pressure on the government for talks. Also, America and European Union can create external pressure on this.
Athar Abbas said that in the past there were several opportunities for India and Pakistan to start talks but all were lost. In this, he mentioned Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee coming to Lahore by bus and then former Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf going to Agra. He also expressed concern over the politically unstable situation in Pakistan. He said that when you are fighting among yourselves, talks cannot take place in such an environment.
The former top Pakistani army officer said that an unstable Pakistan is also harmful to India. In such a situation, we cannot just wait for the government to hold talks with India. Let us tell you that these days Pakistan is going through a serious economic crisis. This is the reason whether it is the army or the government there, everyone is requesting talks with India in one voice. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif himself has appealed for talks with India and said that Pakistan has learned its lesson. However, so far there has been no initiative for talks from the Government of India. The Government of India has made it clear that terrorism and talks cannot go together.
