Sri Lanka is currently going through the worst economic crisis in its history. An emergency is in force in the country and their economy has collapsed. Amidst the Emergency in Sri Lanka, now a political crisis has also arisen. Protests are taking place across the country against the government and some protests have turned violent in some parts of the country. At such a time, the country's hosting rights for the Asia Cup 2022 are being questioned. Will Sri Lanka be able to host a multi-nation tournament at a time when the country is going through its biggest economic crisis, where people are struggling for basic needs? And if not Sri Lanka, will India come forward as an alternate venue to host the event?
Board of Control for Cricket in India President Sourav Ganguly told ANI on Thursday that the board will monitor the situation in the island nation amid the ongoing political and economic crisis there. Sourav Ganguly said, "I cannot comment (about the possibility of hosting India's event) at this point. We will keep watch (on the Sri Lanka situation). Australia is playing there. The Sri Lankan team is also doing well. I cannot comment on this at this time. We wait for a month.
It is worth noting that recently Australia ended their one-month tour of Sri Lanka. The series was very competitive and both the teams played good cricket. Australia won the T20 series 2-1. Sri Lanka won the ODI series 3-2 and the Test series was tied 1-1. Sri Lanka will host Pakistan for a two-match series from July 16 at the Galle International Stadium.
This series featured only 2 teams, while the Asia Cup would have 6 teams – Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, and another Asian team – possibly the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Singapore, or Hong Kong. Who will guarantee the safety of these teams when protests are taking place in the country, that is a big question.
