Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath has shared a powerful message on success, entrepreneurship and India's future, saying that hope is not blind optimism but the determination to keep moving forward regardless of the outcome. Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, health challenges and investment philosophy, Kamath highlighted why trust, patience, continuous learning and problem-solving are the real foundations of long-term success.

His remarks have resonated with entrepreneurs, investors and young professionals looking for guidance in an era shaped by artificial intelligence, economic uncertainty and rapid technological change.

'Hope Means Never Stop Taking the Next Step'

According to Kamath, hope becomes meaningful only when it is backed by a clear purpose.

He said that success does not come from believing everything will automatically work out but from staying committed to solving a real problem and continuing to take the next step, even when the future remains uncertain.

Recalling Zerodha's early years, Kamath said the company started without significant capital or a strong market reputation. Despite constant uncertainty, the focus remained on keeping costs low, staying disciplined and avoiding distractions created by competitors.

According to him, the greatest advantage in business often belongs to those who simply stay in the game longer than everyone else.

Entrepreneurs Should Not Fear Failure

Kamath acknowledged that every entrepreneur experiences fear while building a business.

He believes anyone claiming they have never been afraid has either never taken on a truly difficult challenge or is not being completely honest.

Instead of chasing short-term success, entrepreneurs should remain committed to solving meaningful problems and allow patience and consistency to work in their favor.

Why Nithin Kamath Is Optimistic About India's Future

Kamath expressed strong confidence in India's long-term growth, particularly because of the founders he meets through Rainmatter, Zerodha's startup investment initiative.

He said many startups are working on important challenges, including:

Climate change

Healthcare

Personal finance and investments

Deep technology

Sustainability

However, he also warned that employment generation remains India's biggest challenge.

With the world's largest youth population, India must create enough meaningful jobs to convert its demographic advantage into sustainable economic growth. He emphasized that entrepreneurship should spread beyond metro cities into smaller towns and rural India.

AI Will Change Jobs, But Skills Will Always Matter

Speaking about artificial intelligence, Kamath said AI will undoubtedly transform the nature of work, but it should not become a source of fear.

He encouraged young people to focus on:

Continuous learning

Upskilling

Curiosity

Lifelong education

According to him, people should spend more time learning new skills than worrying about AI replacing jobs.

Nithin Kamath's 'Portfolio of Hope': Five Principles for Success

Although Kamath says luck played a role in Zerodha's success, he believes everyone should build what he calls a "Portfolio of Hope", consisting of five essential principles:

1. Trust

Believe in India's long-term growth, where some of the world's biggest opportunities are expected to emerge.

2. Skill

Improve yourself consistently by learning something new every day.

3. Health

Without good health, professional success loses much of its value.

4. Relationships

Supportive people who genuinely want you to succeed are among life's greatest assets.

5. Patience

Whether in investing, entrepreneurship or life, the biggest rewards usually come to those who remain patient.

Stroke Changed His Perspective on Life

Kamath also reflected on suffering a stroke in 2024, calling it one of life's greatest lessons.

He said the experience made him realize that, in the end, health, family and life itself matter far more than business achievements.

According to him, companies continue to function because of strong teams, but personal well-being cannot be taken for granted.

Rainmatter Invests in Purpose-Driven Startups

Discussing Rainmatter's investment philosophy, Kamath said the platform does not prioritize startup valuations or rapid growth.

Instead, it focuses on founders genuinely committed to solving real-world problems.

Rainmatter has supported more than 160 startups across sectors including climate technology, healthcare, financial services and deep-tech.

Kamath believes that founders driven by purpose rather than valuation are more likely to build enduring companies.

Investing Abroad Is Not Risk-Free

Kamath also spoke about international investing.

While Zerodha has enabled Indian investors to access US stocks through GIFT City, he cautioned that overseas investing is not a guaranteed path to higher returns.

Investors should carefully understand:

Currency fluctuations

Tax implications

Market valuations

Country-specific risks

before investing internationally.

AI Will Transform Investing Too

Looking ahead, Kamath believes artificial intelligence will reshape investing by simplifying research and trade execution.

However, he stressed that AI cannot replace human judgment when it comes to defining financial goals, understanding personal risk tolerance and making investment decisions.

Technology can assist investors, but trust, patience and disciplined decision-making will remain essential.
